new 10 bolt..? 2 change posi from spider gears?

I blew up my 3.23 posi rear end. Went to the junk yard & purchased a "posi 3.23" unit. Turns out, it was not posi, but it was the correct gears. Bhaas and I pulled out the spider gears and ring gear..easy! Now, my question is how hard will it be to pull my old posi unit out of my old rear end, then install it into my new rear end? We welded the axle tubes to the housing. anything else we should do to strenghten this unit? We plan on putting a 9inch or a 12 bolt within the next year.

TY for any help!

Now, I have been reading about a ring gear spacer. Will I need this part to get my posi to work in my new rear end? I am not sure if I have a 2 or 3 carrier rear end. Both my old and new set of gears are 3.23, but the new rear end has a set of spider gears in it..but i was told it was a posi by the junk yard. Maybe I can get some $ back from them...right So, the plan is to take my posi out of the old rear end and put it in to the new rear end so I can have a posi. Do I need a ring gear to make my new rear end work correctly? I am using the same ring and pinion that was in the new rear end, but I'm getting rid of the new spider gears and using the old posi??

A typical posi has spider gears, just like an open. However it also has clutches of some sort (usually).

Post a pic showing the innards of the carrier through the little window; it's pretty easy to identify a posi by sight.

GM doesn't use ring gear spacers. So if you took a posi out of a car with 3.23s, it's a 3 series. Likewise, if your rear doesn't have a spacer, and your ring gear is the same thickness as the others, then your existing carrier and gears are also 3 series; and you don't have or need a spacer. Then, all you have to worry about, is whether the other unitl has the same number of axle spines (26 or 28) as your existing one.

Here's a typical stock posi. Note the spider gears, and the clutches (you can't see the clutches themselves, but you can see the springs that apply them).
