another dead tranny...
started makin noise this morning. sounded like a rock was bouncing around inside the pan. took the pan down at work and saw pieces of metal. thought i could bring it back home but i had to come back b/c it didnt even wanna move while it was in gear. had to come back to my job with the shifter in 1st. the mechanic that i work with was sure it was the pump behind the converter. he said changing those 2 things should fix the problem. no rebuild necessary.
bringing down the tranny is easy. is there a lot involved in changing the pump? is there a good chance that is what went bad? he's not a transmission guy, but says he can do it.
i have an 89 Formula 350 parts car parked outside my house. the stock tranny has 156k miles on it. drives fine but shifts soft. doesnt appear to slip. how long would it be expected to last if i dont race the car or beat on it much?
also debating manual swap. how much do T-5's from the boneyard typically go for? how hard is it for a first timer? never had any thoughts of changing to manual until now. i liked how my automatic felt and shifted. but would be fun to have a 350 stick.
what would be the best option? no new or rebuilt trannys. cant afford it right now. also any good websites with pics that show how to do the manual swap? thanx.
