vss problem

i just a auto to manual swap. the t-5 that i put in is a mechanical speedo and the car is setup for electronic. on my wiring harness that goes down to the tranny there is 2 connectors, one is a 4 plug and the other is a 2 plug. the 4 plug reaches to the tailshaft where the vss would sit. what is the vss part number for the 4 plug. the car is a 88 firebird. origanally had the 700r4. i would like to get this fixed so i can see how fast im going.

The 4-prong plug is not used on the T5. Leave it unplugged. The 2-prong plug is for the VSS.

The sensor part # is 10456087 and the stealership usually charges $90+. You can find it cheaper at Advance Auto Parts or NAPA. Or if you have a friend at the stealership, he could get you a good discount.

What gears you got in the back? That would matter for the VSS plastic gears you need to use.

For your 3.42 gears, you'll need the purple (7-tooth) drive gear in the tailhousing (part #14071731) and the grey (22-tooth) driven gear on the VSS shaft (part # 14090595).

Watch out, the driven gears are VERY overpriced so expect to pay cca $25 for a cheap piece of plastic. Don't ask me why but the gears for automatic trannys are bigger, yet cost cca $3.

You are correct, the 4-prong connector is for the TC lockup etc.

And you are correct again, the 2-prong connector in the middle of the tranny casing is the reverse hookup. You will need to extend the blue and green wires from the former auto shifter switch to that connector on the tranny. You'll need to get the right plug, tho. So good luck.

Lemme know if you have any more questions.

lou you have been a big help. the one thing that still bothers me is the 4 prong connector that was on my auto went to the vss on the auto tranny. just sounds weird to me. but thanks for all the info.

AFAIK, the 4-pin connector does not carry the speed signal. That's what the separate 2-pin connector is for. GM did not combine these wires. Although the 4-pin connector can reach all the way to the tailhousing, it does not plug in there.

You say that on your auto tranny, the 4-pin connector went to the tail of the tranny. Where did the 2-pin connector go then? And did your speedometer work?

Hmmm, strange. Very strange. The VSS output should always be in the tailhousing. At least it is on my 700R4 and T5.

I hope somebody will chime in to clear that up for us.

i wish i had my old tranny to look at it again. the other day when i was at the junk yard i saw a t-5 there with a 4 prong vss. i tryed to get it but it was already sold to someone and the owner wouldnt sell me the vss. i think what im gonna do is just a vss, extend the wires that have the 2 prong plug, plug everything in and see what happens. lou you have been a big help thank you.
