700r4 and the drag strip
I have a stock 305 tbi with a 700r4 trans
I changed the TV Plunger to prevent part-throttle downshifts
I adjusted the TV cable to factory specs. Everything works great on the street.
nice shifts- nice cruising speed in forth gear.
Took the car to the Atco Raceway Sunday for Test and Tune
I made 4 passes. Each with the same result --- no 4th gear
and it simply ran out of power.
2 passes were drive and go ...... 2 passes were manual shifts
the drive and go shifted what I thought was late 4700rpm
the manual shifts were a disaster - the trans would not shift
until it wanted to.
I did manage to get 4th gear, but only when I lifted at the end of the run.
The idea of lifting during a drag race is not appealing to me.
I was wondering if I would be better off with a full-manual control valve body

or make the switch to a th350- th400 since I already have both of
them sitting here. The car is a weekend ride or when ever the mood hits not a daily driver. I plan on making some mods in the spring - Lt1 cam, holly 670tbi, hooker headers and 3" catback
thanks for any help

the 700r4 wont shift into OD at full throttle unless it has a different upshift valve, this was available for police packaged cars, do a search for b4c. Get the gm part number then go to gmpartsdirect.com for the kit, its the upshift valve (sleeve plunger and spring) boost valve, and gaskets $15 dollars. I just bought it for mine. Its not in yet though. You have to drop the pan and filter, and then remove the valve body.
The transmission should shift at the governor WOT rpm on the 1-2 & 2-3 shift. If it does not, then the oil capacity to the band or clutches is lacking. This can be solved by adding larger boost valves, Corvette servo, Trans-Go Performance Shift kit, etc. This in most cases can fix this, if the clutches & band are still in good shape. Let me know?

I'm going for the transgo kit - comes with the vett servo
and larger booste valve. Should solve my problem
I am also looking for a 350 motor - this should solve the
other problem of running out of power.
