6 speed driveshafts fit autos?

I have an automatic transmission in my 86 TA and I want to put an aluminum driveshaft in it. Some one here has a shaft from a 6 speed and said it only works with other 6 speeds. Is that true?

I did search and all I found was that they are universal. However the guy selling it says it only fits 6 speeds.

I'm not about to buy something unless I know for sure. So many times people on forums forget things or are just wrong so I am looking for a definite answer.

Amen to that.

Honestly though the advice here on TGO is like no other. To varify your answer try a few searches. You shoud find re-afirming posts that back up what jmd is saying. It is hard to go wrong with the extensive archives that TGO has.

I still haven't found 6 speed specific related answers. Its always "82-02 5 speed trannies are all interchangable".

Sometimes knowledge takes time.
<--- + a few T56 swaps under my belt + T5 swaps = I can tell you that all 83-02 f-body driveshafts from T5, T56, 700-R4, and 4L60 cars interchange.

The ones that a magnet won't stick to.

You just gotta go look.

AFAIK however, all LS1 cars have aluminum; those are the easiest ones to get, besides.

Some LS1 cars did recieve a steel shaft. They were the A4 cars that were crippled with 2.73 gears. Those gears kept the rotation speed down of the shaft and necesitate (is that a word?) a lightweight balanced aluminum one. Many LT1 cars had steel shafts as well. My '95 M6 Z had a steel shaft.

Found this thread while searching, I swear.

I called a local junkyard that happened to give up an LS1 driveshaft to another local 3rd gen'r for $100 out the door. But when I asked if they had anymore, they told me there were two options, with or without a "slip yoke". Any thoughts? Or are they indexing their parts seperate for no reason?

Otherwise I'm happy to see that all shafts are universal!

You want one with the "slip yoke" still on it. No point in getting one that's missing pieces.

So the slip yoke is basically a part of the driveshaft? Cool. Thanks!
