4th Gen Auto Shifter into third gen?
Well I have have a 4l60e as you can see...and I have been haveing problems hooking up shift linkage. I recently aquired a shift cable and shifter from an lt1 camaro to try and solve this problem. If I can find a way to hook up the 4th gen shift cable up to my stock third gen shifter than that is fine and I wont even bother with the shifter...but If i cant do that effectively, how difficult is it to get the 4th gen shifter to mount up and work properly? This is one of the last few pieces of the puzzle to getting my car done and on the street, and it has been a real pain in my neck. Any info would help. Thanks.
Chris
*Also how does the shift **** come off? Do you just pop it off and have to epoxy it back on? Or does it screw off? Im asking because im at college and cant go check right now.

Well I figured that I would try it out anyways even though no one seems to have tried it and see how it goes. Ill answer my own question just incase anyone is searchin the same thing...
The shifter is bigger but will physically fit in the consol. In order to get it to fit somewhat properly You have to cut one of the mounting tabs off on the bottom right corner. In order to get the shifter hight to be proper you will have to remove some metal on the top of the tranny tunnel where the original shifter is mounted. The big connection on the shifter doesnt seem to want to go on, but I didnt try very hard. You will have to drill your own holes after you get it set properly.
All in all, its too much work. I was originally trying to do it to hook up the 4th gen shift cable because I have a 4l60e but found out that I could just ghetto rig the 4th gen cable on the third gen shifter, and it will work fine.

I put my 3rd gen shifter into my brothers 4th gen last year and it works great. I used the 3rd gen cable as well on teh 4L60E with no issues.
Reason I did this swap was that my dad was driving my brothers car and he had a hard time using the B&M megashifter my brother had in his car and so I took the B&M and put into my Formula and put the Formula shifter into my brtohers 96 Trans Am.

yea i could see how a thirdgen shifter would work in 4thgen better because it is a little smaller in dimension, but the 4th gen shifter in a third gen was a little more dificult. It could be done, but a bit of a hassel. I just mainly wanted the shift cable because for some reason my third gen cable just didnt want to work on the 4L60E.

Did you figure out how to get the shifter **** off if not there is a small clip on the front or back of the **** and you just pop it out with a screw driver
