Wiring Help, Mystery Wire Near Tranny!

i recently have been doing a motor swap in my 88 camaro. i had a v6 and i put a 305 tbi in. i am making all my final connections and i am almost ready to fire her up. i can not find where one of my wires go from my harness. there is an connector for the lockup system on the drivers side of my 700r4 transmission. that is connected but i have another wire from there that is no longer than 8 inches, it has to connect to something very close but i can't find it. please, any input that u think might help i would gratly appreciate.

Can you scan a picture of this wire? If not, what does the connector on the end of the wire look like (shape wise)?

Oil Pressure switch. It's located just above you're oil filter on the side of the block...

Hold on, wait... before you check that area, where (which side) is the wire located? Is it apart of you're new TBI's harness, or you're existing 2.8's chassis harness?

The Oil Pressure switch should have an Orange & Tan/White wire... not a purple & yellow. Let me double check something on my own 88.

Sounds like the connector for the VSS on the tailshaft of the tranny.

Could very well be. Good call Benm109!

Edit: Just checked the Vehicle Speed Sensor on my 88, and although the wires are different in color... the connector seems to match perfectly.

What transmission are you using? You're original, or did you install a new tranny with you're swap as well?

You're existing 2.8 automatic tranny did not come with a VSS. If this is the case, you'll need to buy a buffer...

Edit: Although I don't see how that is possible (in reference to a missing 2.8 VSS), but then again, this is according to Chilton...

i do not have the v6 tranny in, i swapped the engine and tranny together. i don't know why i don't see the connection, it should be simple, the wire can only go so far

It is. There is a retaining bolt found on the tranny, once removed (make sure you have a pan to catch the fluid), remove the VSS. You'll need to discard it's O-Ring, and get yourself a replacement.

Edit: My apologies, I thought you were replacing it.

is this bolt on the drivers side of the tranny or what? the funny thing is this motor and transmission worked great before i swapped it to this car. i never had a problem with how it ran, i dont remember if that was connected to something or not when i took it off.

mystery

i think i figured it out, the wiring harness is for a transmission with an electric vss and the transmission is set up for a cable vss. thankyou for the help. i dont think it is going to hurt anything if my cable vss is connected and the stray wire just hangs there. is it?

No biggie. You're SES light will stay on, and both you're converter's 'lock-up'... and ECM's speed limiter, will not be functional (con - you'll lose a little gas mileage, pro - you can now go as fast as you want).

You're TBI's VSS connector is supposed to connect to a by-pass. Someone might have discarded it when they sold you the engine and tranny, or maybe you accidentally tossed it when the swap was made...

Again, no biggie. Their plentiful...

the wires are hanging there because the camaro used a vss on the guage cluster and the firebird used it on the transmission

I have that exact connection hanging from the rear of the motor close to the drivers head. Its not connected either. I have always wondered what it went to and still dont know.

I think what Jproz is trying to say is: Firebirds with full gauges got the VSS in the tailshaft starting in '86. (Non-full-gauge Firebirds still had the VSS in the speedomter.) So it may be a Camaro vs Firebird factory-parts-bin thing, if Camaros & Firebirds used the same engine wiring harness. I forget when the Camaros got the tranny mounted VSS... wasn't it in 1988 or 89?

Just a wild guess!
