Should I get a new rear end?
Its the stock gears for an 86 T/A and I'm wondering if changing the ratio will save me some time and make it more fun to ride. My only complaint is I cruise at 80mph and aabout 2300 rpms. I'd like to keep that lower if possible too, but I can't have everything I suppose. Any ideas?
3.73's will make it feel like a whole new car...you'll still maintain a reasonable amount of gas mileage, and it'll feel alot quicker....4.10's are real fun, but really really bad gas mielage...

Do you have a stock tranny? 700-r4? if you have the auto id probably reccomend 3.42's i have 3.73's and feel that they are borderline overkill.
is it a peg leg one wheel wonder rearend or do you have limited slip? because if you put 3.73's and keep the open differential your probably going to have severe traction problems off the line...

Do you have an automatic with overdrive? If so don't worry about gears too much...I know that my swap was not drastic but when I went from 2.73s to 3.23s I saw no decrease, in fact I saw an increase if anything (just a small one though)
The overdrive still keeps me in a very low RPM when I'm cruising the highway.

Yeah, its a stock automatic tranny. I'm not really looking for it to feel faster, I want it to actually run faster 1/4s.
So stock is 2.73 from what I've read. Would 3.42 be the best option? Where should I look to get one?

i would say 3.73's would be your best option...IMO its the best overall gear out....but look around, pretty much all performance sites have gears for sale...you need the one made for a 2 series carrier tho..
