Which Tranny to Use?

My 450hp street motor is in the works, the only big decision left is a tranny. I could rebuild the 700r4 I have with like a $350 Hughes kit or sumthin just a little better than stock. But the engine will be putting out just about the most the 700r4 would be able to handle. Or my friend will sell me a stock rebuilt TH350 of his for $400. The engines peak power will be around 6500rpm, and I have a 3.42 rear end. This car is for the street on weekends, and the track. Dont need overdrive, but I like the car to rev up quick and bang through the gears like a 4 speed can. What would it be like with a TH350? What would first and second gear wind out too? I need to be fast off the line.

700r4 has a deeper 1st gear. I believe it is a 3.06:1 and a th350 is 2.52:1. So first will feel slower but the drop from 1st to 2nd won't be horrible like a 700r4. I personally went with a th350 for my 300hp motor. Becuase I have already fried two 700r4s. So I bought a TCI street fighter. I hope to have the car done this week. I am excited.

My friends brother went through I believe four 700r4's winding them out to 6500rpm in short periods of time. I found another cam that will make almost the same power but at like 5700rpm, so I could use a 700r4, and it would get me moving quicker like I want to. But I know a th350 will be able to handle the power no problem.

I drove mine alittle tonight for the first time. It shifts awesome. So nice and crisp. My 700r4's never felt like this. I haven't got on it hard yet but the part throttle shifts are awesome. You can barely feel it. Nice and crisp.

Now I have to crawl back under the car and tighten the lines down...and the pan is leaking alittle.

i've driven my buddies' 700r4-camaro, and i have a th350. everyone (including me) who drives mine loves it, even with out the OD. I have a posi 3.42 rear, and i'll never go back. since you'll have the power, you can jump on it from any speed in the power band, and it'll respond. crisp, precise, and it just feels good, especially with a shifter of some kind. my buddies car feels terrible. it doesn't respond quickly to inputs, it hunts for gears, and generally drives like crap. but the OD is great for cruising.
