Noise from torque converter or front pump.
Im getting this odd, but relatively faint noise from the torque converter, or possibly from the front pump. Id say it sounds like its coming from the convterter. I didnt notice it untill I put an exhaust on.
I got under the car while its running in P/N and the noise is like light valve clatter coming from the TC that varies with the RPMs. Its not as pronounced when the car is in gear. I sort of heard it through the pan when I put the trans in, so its likely been making this noise since I rebuilt it. Any idea on what it is? Did TCI send me a bum converter?

I'd like to know too as I seem to get the same noise in mine. Not as loud when Im in park but as Im driving down the road I can hear it. Sounds to me like a faint propellar sound, like i can hear the fins spining in the converter, my guess.
Mine is a brand new MidWest 2800.....
thanks!

Retorqued the bolts to spec and added a dab of threadlock, just to be sure that wasnt the problem that was causing the noise.

My 700r4 was making a ticking noise. I didnt know how many miles where on it so I replaced it with a rebuilt 700r4.
The car sat for about 5 months I started it and there was the ticking noise again. It was coming from the converter and pump area. I also noticed the fly wheel was wobling. I put a new fly wheel on it last night. The ticking is gone. As far as the tranny I pulled out I kept it. It shifted fine but made a ticking noise.
I put a fresh short block in it a yr before I put the new tranny in it,I noticed my flywheel had a tooth chipped so I bought a flywheel from the junk yard(BIG MISTAKE) They unbolted it from a core 305 Took a pry bar to pry it off. So I put a new fly wheel on but I swiped some anti seize on the center hole so if I replace the flywheel later I wont bend it taking it off.
So to make a long story short I learned never put a used flywheel on unless you know its good and the ticking from my tranny was a bad flywheel. Sorry this is so long I hope it helps!
Thanks Randy

My car didnt make this kind of noise at all. The only thing that got replaced was the trans and a new high stall torque converter and now I have the noise. I didnt touch the flywheel in anyway except to undo the bolts. Something is making the noise and its coming from the converter area......I need to take it back to the tranny shop and have them confirm what it is. It has been making the noise since I first cranked it up. If its the tranny I can get that fixed under warranty. If its the converter that can be fixed too but I will be pissed cause its my dail driver and I cant afford to be car-less for up to 2 weeks...having to pull it out and send it off and wait to get it back.

I did check for distortion in the flexplate the last time I was there. The ring gear is all sorts of crooked and wobbley from half-assed fabrication. This causes one of the pads to be about .020" or so away from the flexplate since its warped slightly from the botched ring gear. Is this enough to cause problems?

I replaced the flexplate and it fixed my problem, and your right about the Gm flywheels. Im going aftermarket the next time.
I got a Pieneer heavy duty on my berlinetta and it is zink plated.
Runs strait. The Gm flexplate still wobles.Makes the car shake when running. The berlinetta doesnt move at all with motormounts that are shot

Heres a sound clip recorded near the underside of the car by the front pass. side wheel. Its hard to hear (turning down the bass helps), but its a distinct periodic metallic noise in the background. Its coming from inbetween the TC and the FP. Its hard to localize it. Its not loud, but its definatly not a normal noise to be hearing from the trans. What could it be?

Mine was louder, and a constant ticking. Even in drive.

yeah mine too but I seriously doubt its the flywheel...how can it be if it didnt make the sound before and the flywheel was untouched except to remove the bolts which were not torqued down to about 30 lbs.
Cant be. I would think.
its gotta be something else.

Your flywheel is probly fine, Im just saying mine wasnt and it caused my car sound like the engine was going to rattle apart. It was so bad I stopped driving it it was embarassing.

I think I isolated the sound. It actually appears to be loudest around the rear of teh oil pan. I dont hear much noise around the front pump except right at the base of the front of the trans I can hear that sound. Its probably being transmitted through the tc/transmission. Come to think of it I remember hearing this several years ago and I was just as baffled then. Oh well. The short block has been making this noise for 10's of thousands of miles so hopefully itll continue for 10's of thousands more without issues.
With all my luck, though, the trans is probably dying a quiet death and itll up and quit one day...

Looks like that sound coming from the torque converter was the prelude to a catastrophic failure after all. Took the pan off and there was an s-load of ferrous metal particles clustered around the magnet with a few slightly larger pieces hanging out in the pan. From the looks and sound of it something in the torque converter or possibly the pump munched itself. Thats pretty typical for this damn car

Man I was so hoping it was the flywheel. Not so i would be right, but it would be a cheap easy fix. Damn I wish I knew more about automatics. Whats the trans shop going to do?

Found the problem when I pulled it today. The front bushing was completly obliterated and the input shaft had alot of scuffing on it. Evidently that runout on that one pad of the flexplate really can do alot of damage. Hopefully its that and not something like the crank shaft being off to one side. Id be SOL if it was that. What a load of

ANY noise like this and seriously check it out. I had a chatter around Wednesday, and I figured I would look at it on the weekend. Next day I got home from work with a slippy, iregular shifting tranny. I dropped it, took it to the shop, and he said the converter was fried, and sent the metal through the entire tranny. It wasn't even worth rebuilding. If I had of just stopped driving it, I may have saved myself a rebuild. I wasn't to broken up about it though, it lasted 202k's

Wow mines been doing the same for a week. Rattling first and then big time slipping if I give a lot of throttle. Luckily I happen to have another Camaro that isn't running with a rebuilt tranny and converter in it. BTW mine has 197,000 mile on it.

Mine had 5k on it since the rebuild and it was working great untill the flexplate took it out.

Sounded like the flex plate to me, after awhile a bad flex plate can put major wear on the rear main bearing.
