700R4 Questions

Ok, here's my problem. I just finished my install of my new trans from TPI Performance trans and during ther test drive I can't get the trans to downshift at WOT no matter where I am at in the gear selector. I've been moving the tv cable around in 1/8" increments with no change, what am I missing or doing wrong? I've even gome back to square one and started over by moving the tv cable back to the firewall and ratcheting it out with the throttle and still can't get it right. I'm using Bowtie Overdrives TV system which consists of their brackets and new GM cable and such. The car shifts quickly and downshifts when braking ok. This is new territory for me so any help would be appreciated. Thanks..

That sure sounds like a TV problem... But you said it shifts ok otherwise, right? The only thing I can think is that the TV isn't the proper length, or the valve is partially sticking. Does the cable move freely?

Yea, the cable appears to be free. I hooked a pressure gauge to it to check the pressures and everything seems fine. When I originally talked to the people at Bowtie Overdrives to give the pressure readings he said all the numbers are good. He says you are supposed to be within 5lbs of the readings between a connected TV at idle versus unconnected at idle, I was at that point and other than the fact I can't get the thing to down shift on acceleration at wot I don't know. I guess I'll start by checking the fluid levels again to be doubly sure it is right. I went out and double checked the throttle opening to full and it is and I pushed the tv back in all the way and grabbed the throttle and went to wot to set the tv once again, so I'll have see what happens tomorrow when I get home from work. Thanks for any help you can give me..

Does the trans downshift from OD to 3rd? or does it not do anything period at WOT?

Ok, here's what I did and it seems to be ok now. I went back to square one and first got wot to work right, then I set my idle and changed throttle springs. The old springs weren't pulling the throttle back all the way, it would stay anywhere from 200-400 rpm higher and I could pull it back by hand on the carb. Then I pushed the tv cable all the way back into unit towards the firewall and then I ratched it out by way of pulling on the throttle on the carb itself. When I was done with that I checked to see if I had any free play at the end of the tv before any throttle movement was applied, I pulled the tv cable out 2 clicks more and left it. Today when I got home I started it up and got it warm and checked the fluid level again, it was right at lowest mark on the dipstick so I added fluid to bring it up to just before the high mark and stopped there. Took the car out and now it is fine, shifts up correctly and downshifts when coming to a stop. Then I did a quick jab to wot from 3rd gear and overdrive and man did it drop and run, life is good and now much more fun. Thanks for the help
