IMMEDIATE: 4th Gen Drive Shaft
my car was at the shop getting tuned and everything, and my mechanic took it for a ride, and the caps on the rear u joint shot out and the driveshaft busted off from the rearend yoke...and pretty much anilated the driveshaft...so i have the chance to throw in a 4th gen aluminum driveshaft...i just want to make sure this is a direct swap, mounts to the trans yoke and is the right lenght and everything...i need to know pronto, so I can find somebody or someplace with a driveshaft...

well, spur of the moment, me and my buddy drove an hour, and took the one off his 90 trans am, thats incommissioned right now...so that'll get by for a while...but this winter i'll swap in a 4th gen, cuz this one is all rusty and i'm not gonna clean it before i throw it on cuz i wanna get this thing on the road....
but is there a certain year i should look for, or are all the 93-02 4th gen shafts identical?

Only some LT1 cars got the aluminum shaft, not many, I believe there was a diameter difference between the two fwiw.

All 4th gen allum shafts are the same. Any LT1 or LS1 with the crappy 2:73 gears and speed limited at 105 MPH got the steel shaft. The reason for the speed limiter so low is cause of the speed rating of the tires that came on those cars from factory.
Don't know much at all about the V6 4th gens, I usually ignore that suff.

Okay, 93-97 1le's had the same aluminum driveshaft that 1le third gen's had. It is 2.5" in diameter.
98-02 LS1 w/o 2.73 gears got a 3" diameter aluminum driveshaft.

What differences are there on the allum. shafts? I've never noticed any.

Possible. I have a 3rd gen allum. shaft sitting in my garage and my 98 SS has an allum. shaft. Next time I'm under it, I'll compare the two.

It's 3 inch but I am not sure of it's status. The guy I got it from said he droped it and it needs to be straightened. You can't tell by looking at it. He told me a tranny shop could straighten it for 50 - 75 bucks. I've heard of people straightening them and they are as good as new but have no experence with that myself.

just curious if my case is a little weird or not. my '84 shaft attached to a 10-bolt and will not fit in my '85 w/ a BW 9 bolt, its too long, and the '85 shaft is too short for the 10 bolt. the difference is only about an inch and a half, but its enough.
