I need other ideas for my rear end

I did do extensive searching but i didn't quite find out what i'm looking for. so here it goes..

i need a solid rear end to hold up to a 383 i'm going to build. I was going to use a 12bolt out of a 68 hurst olds that had a 455, but after looking at the rear end the other day, i'm starting to think i might be better off going another route.

so what i want to know, if i go to a u pull it junk yard, what vehicles would have a rear end that will hold up to the 383, and especially which ones will be easiest to bolt in?

and buying a new moser or something is totally out of the question, as it is no where near possible cuase of the budget.

Only rear ends from a thirdgen or fourthgen F body will fit without fabrication.

lot depends on how you apply the power and what you do to strengthen the factory rear

You could buy just the housing from moser or strange, I think 600 bucks or so. Then you could use wrecking yard parts for the rest. You would need to find a chevy 12 bolt for parts, though. Not real easy. The olds 12 bolt is different if it is the original axle. No real interchangeable parts. Also, there are alot of people who make pre-fab ford 9 inch housings for third gens. Then you could use a wrecking yard center section until you had the money to buy the tough stuff. Just suggestions. Probably have a few hundred bucks in axle shafts, too.

The aftermarket housings will normally come with axles so all you need to do is install a complete center section and some brakes.

ok, i just looked at the housings (i didn't even know i could go that route) and it seems the one i might go for is the moser 9" bolt in housing.

it comes with the housing, torque arm brackets, axles (up to 35 spline), wheel bearings, wheel studs, and retainer plate.

now if i went this route, what all do i still have to get. from what i'm assuming all i would have to really get is the center section. so i could just go to the junkyard and pull the 3rd member out of any 9", is this right?

and if i need brakes too i'm assuming i can just steal them off a junkyard axle.. so are there any 9"'s that cames stock with disk brakes.

I've seen lincolns with disk brakes from the 70s but wrong bolt pattern. You could theoretically use a junkyard 9 inch drop in until you could afford to buy a better one, but you would still have to buy new side gears to match the new axle shafts. Most likely you will not get 33 or 35 spline side gears from a beat down pickup in a wrecking yard. I don't know what those cost. Good luck, but if you're on a severe budget (hundreds of dollars versus thousands) you'd probably be better off putting a lock-right or powertrax locker in your stocker and just start saving now for the complete rear end with all the good stuff. Just my opinion, good luck however you end up!!

I'm getting close to needing 35 spline axle but not yet. You sure don't need 35 spline axles.

Ford produced 28 and 31 spline axle systems. That's what you're going to find in the junkyard so buy the housing package for 31 spline axles. You'll have to learn how to identify a 31 spline housing so you don't have to keep pulling axles. You're not going to find a great gear ratio in the junk yard. Unless you get real lucky, don't expect to find anything better than a 3.25 or 3.50 ratio. A limited slip diff (posi) might be found and hopefully in 31 spline.

As for brakes, I use Ford drum brakes. My housing uses what's call the large Ford bearing. Everything I pulled from the junkyard is for this type of housing. I pulled some good condition backing plates then found some almost new brakes, hardware and wheel cylinders. The only thing I didn't pull from the junkyard was drums. I wanted new ones so I went to the local parts store and started comparing the choices. I think my shoes are 11" x 2-1/2" or 2-1/4" (I can't remember). I had them pull different drums from cars that used those brakes until I found a lightweight drum. Most of the drums were huge with huge cooling fins on them.

When I bought my axles, I made sure the wheel studs were in the Ford bolt pattern. Some axles come with both patterns. The Ford brakes fit perfectly onto the Ford housing with no adapting required. The last step is rims. I was already using Weld Draglite rims and they have Chev and Ford bolt pattern so all I had to do was use the other bolt pattern and my rims bolted right up.

I don't have a park brake so I didn't worry about cables. I also ran new brake lines.

yeah i've had a good deal of experience with the 9".. to fund my camaro build, i'm parting with my 78 Bronco i restored and lifted. my plan is to pull a third member (probably out of a bronco cuase then it will be 3.50) and then go to one of my bronco parts places and get a limited slip carrier.

since you brought up wheels (something i hadn't thought about) i was planning on just using the stock wheels on the camaro. will these bolt on to the axles that are gonna come with the moser 9"?

I think you have to specify the wheel bolt pattern that you want when you order
