vss - speedo conversion to an non-ecm cab/HEI set up

I popsted this in the ECM section, but thought that some of you guys could help as well....

My '91Z had been converted to a carb/HEI set up, and most of the ECM hardware has been removed from the car.
Speedo now does not work. The VSS sensor is still on the tranny (t5) however I do not even know where to start to convert the signal to something the Speedo can read without the ECM... It seems that the conector/wire harness to the VSS has been removed as well.
Someone mentioned that there is a conversion kit available for such an application, but he wasn't able to give me datails.
Any info would be appreciated.

All you need to know is on this page, I did this on my old 84

http://la.rsson.com/speedo/speedo.html

If you need the buffer (yellow box) I have one I can part with just drop me an e-mail jan_l@rsson.com and I do you a deal on it along with the electrical connector that goes with it.

Thanks for the info Jan - this is a great start. I am just looking through the GM shop manual for '91 and now need some clarification....
My Z was TPI equipped (LB9) so the VSS signal was interpreted by my ECM. Now that the TPI set up has been removed, I have to revert to the VSS Buffer which does what the ECM did. The VSS Buffer was on the TBI 5.0 (L03) powered cars. So once I get the Buffer- I follow your instructions - this seems clear but I have one other follow up question. How does the VSS Buffer attach to the Speedo? Will the wire harness that is in the back of my dash have the correct terminas for the hookup? I'm not sure.. You mention the location for the green wire - the speedo, but does this hook up to a terminal, a connector or ??? I haven't actually looked behind the dash yet. I assume I will have to pull the gauge cluster out?

I was refered to the Dakota Digital web site http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.cfm - They carry a Universal Speedometer Signal Interface (SGI) - does this function like the factory VSS Buffer? Is it something to consider, or is it overkill for what I intend to do - just get my SPeedo working?

Sorry about the questions, never done anything like this before.
Thanks in adavance.
I may just take you up on your offer.

I use the Dakota Digital box. $80 new from them, and it takes some fooling with to get it working. But it makes gear changes and tire swaps a breeze.
