T56 - Bad third gear? How to tell
Last night I took the car out for a test drive (replaced the gernaded rear end with a used 3.73 disc rear from a 97 along with a T56 from a 97). Everything worked great...idled great (after messing with the timing), shifts in and out of the gears fine, clutch feels fine. On my drive, i was just going up and down the street I live on (probably no more than 50 yards). Drove great in reverse, great in 1st, great in 2nd....but when I shifted into third....I felt a strong vibration (not as bad as when my rear end got ripped apart) and what sounded like a disel engine. Tried to give it a little more gas and the vibration just got worse. Pushed the clutch in and everything was normal. Because it was late, and I didnt want to drive too far just yet, I just parked it and went inside.
Now the question is....is there something wrong with the tranny...or was I just not going fast enough to go into third? Speedometer isnt hooked up...but Im sure I wasnt going any faster than about 35-40.....I would guess around 30-35.
Any sure fire way to know?
Thanks a lot.
