I've recently started having problems getting my T5 to shift into reverse. It's like hitting a wall, it just won't shift into reverse. Won't grind, won't do anything. I had the clutch, pressure plate, and clutch fork replaced a little over a year ago. As far as I know, the fluid is fine..... they made sure it was full when they replaced the clutch. I have no problems with 1-4 a single bit ..... no grinding or anything. Occassionally, 5th will give me a tiny bit of problems but nothing major.

Any ideas on what the problem is and what the fix might be?

TIA!

try double clutching it, or shifting into 5th first, since 5th ins't sybcro'd you need to find the sweet spot

I always shift to 5th gear before hitting reverse. There is no Syscro's in reverse. Doing that will stop the gears spining inside and it will suck the stick in. They did that so you won't shift into reverse while rolling forward.

Thanks for the advice guys. Unfortunately, I've already tried that. I was aware that reverse wasn't syncro'd but nothing I try will work.

I suppose I should mention that this tranny is actually in my '90 Beretta GTZ which is FWD. According to a local tranny shop, it could be a bushing or the linkage needs replacement/adjustment. Makes sense since the FWD cars need linkage of some sort to shift with. They're going to check it out for me next week for $60. If that fails, and the tranny needs rebuilding, they quoted me $708 labor to remove, rebuild, and replace. Then they said depending on what they had to replace it could be in the $300-$350 range for parts. I figure this is better than spending $1000 on another used car and not knowing what is wrong with it and what will go out on me in the near future.

It ended up being the cable..... it finally snapped last friday. Got it replaced and everything is just fine now.
