clutch assembly

Did a hydraulic master cylinder swap out on my 85 to the newer style LT-1 set-up. Basically a direct fit replacement the new unit came sealed so no bleeding required and comes with a stainless braided hose line. Question is has anyone done this swap and found that it does not shift into gears as smoothly, I almost have to force it into all gears you can feel it pop into gear, like it is not totally disengaging the clutch?? Thanks Mike

I would try bleeding it a little more, even though its a pain. If don't work out, we'll find a solution. The LT1 style hydraulics are nice though.

Thanks that would be the only thing I can think of since it is exactly the same as the older style unit except for the Hose.

Is it true that to bleed the Lt-1 style set all you have to do is drop the unit and push the piston in and out??

Yes, it's that simple. You might want to loosen the master as well, I noticed more air after doing this on my system.

I hate to sound ignorant but, the slave is the one under the car? And the master is the one that goes through the firewall correct? Do I keep the cap on the resevoir while im pumping the piston? Sorry for all the questions. But it seems like the hose that connects to the resevoir is just connected with a zip tie and it was leaking from there....Thanks Mike

The slave is the one underneither the car and the master is the one that goes through the firewall. You should take the cap off and remember to keep the resevoir filled, however I doubt you have that much air in there. Double check the leak before you continue. Also did you keep the whole assembly together when you installed it?

I normally cut it after the install, and just leave the little plastic cap on there. Its less work that way.

I found that out the hard way I originally did it like you said but was leary of leaving the plastic cap on did not know if it would have effected the travel of the clutch at all and as luck would have it the piston popped out of the seat and man that was not fun trying to reseat the piston arm considering I did this alone and for the first time

First times are the worst. If you start having lots of problems in the slave, you'll build some strength. I know I did .

Yeah my forearms looked like popeyes after I was done trying to push the piston in and put the shield on and get it close enough to get the bolts through then I started to use my brain and found a pair of vice grips to hold it in place

Every time I tell my self next I'll get longer bolts and crank it down that way. But I never get around to it .

Here's a website that I had on bleeding those hydraulics
