700r4 wont shift correctly(need pic of cable adjusted correctly)

HEY GUYS I NEED SOME HELP WITH MY 89 GTA. IT HAS A 350 WITH A 700R4, IVE ADJUST THE CABLE BY HOLDING IN THE D TAB AND PULLING THE CABLE BACK TO THE FIREWALL AND THEN PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL TO THE WOT, BUT IT WILL SHIFT WAY TO EARLY IN , LIKE 7MPH,WHERE SHOULD IT REALLY BE SHIFTING AT? I NOW THAT THE TRANNY IT SELF IS NOT THE PROBLEM BECAUSE THIS IS THE THIRD ONE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AND ITS A TCI. COULD IT BE THE TV CABLE ITSELF IS BAD?

yes, the tv cable could be/is probably stretched. when this happens, it will not adjust. stock should shift from 1st to 2nd at an average of 14-18 mph. i would think a tci would shift more like 20 mph. you can get a new throttle cable from the dealer for about $15. it was about 12 when i bought mine 3 years ago.

I know that it is possible that the cable is stretched but if it was wouldnt it stay towards the firewall rather than clicking all they way foward causing the early soft shifts, its as if the cable itself is not long enough. if i adjust myself to where it shifts at around 15 mph everything seems fine but i cant go WOT because it will go back to shifting to early.

ok, i thought that you were saying it wouldn't adjust. when rebuilding, sometimes a shorter tv link is put in to trannys to compensate for stretched cables. a new or good cable wouldn't need this. the shorter link also makes sure that the home mechanic adjusts the cable to a certain degree for carry-out units. i compensated when i built mine by putting in larger boost valves. which tci unit did you get? they make some that are just stock rebuilds with a mild shift improver kit and good frictions.

i got the one off of summit, the street fighter , but ive had three different trannys in it so far. the problem started after i had the stock tranny rebuild it was in stalled by a real mechanic since i dont have a lift. come to think of it, i think that the case was replace or maybe the whole thing.

Cant you compensate for the stretchiness. I would do the TV cable adjustment and since its stretched, I would either pull it forward one notch, or pull it backward one notch. See what happens.

I just started adjusting mine today, and it seems like mine is stretched a bit. So I moved the cable one notch forward to keep the tranny in its powerband. (At least I think I did it right) we'll see!

the cable for my tranny doesnt seem to be streched, its like the cable is to short making it click to many times and come all the way to the front. maybe the d plastic is worn and clicking to easily I take that back the cable is long enough because the throttle will open all the way but the tranny wont be shifting correctly.

that really did not work at all.. you can not use the img tag and then link it to your computer.. that will not work.. you have to attach the image if you want to do it that way.. as far as the tv cable thing... Did you go from a TB to a carb ever,, or an FI to a carb.. or a carb to any type of FI? Reason i say is because the cables are different lengths.. Second..... if you try to adjust it and it does not adjust right ever.. then you may need a new cable.. I am in that same position you are in.. only mine is waaaay to long (was from a tbi and i have a carb). Another.. Is your setup original? if it is an aftermarket carb you will need to get the proper brackets for it to work correctly with the TV cable. Idealy the transmission should shift at certain pressure ranges.. there is a chart you can get from TCI as to when the shifts should occur... I went and actually bought a preassure gauge and attached it to my trans Line and then mounted it inside the car (It will go in it's own spot on the custom dash when i am done making it) That is how i know forsure mine is not shifting right where it should.. and it is because of the cable....

the car came with and still has the tpi setup from the factory. im guessing that its the original tv came since ive never changed it and worked before the tranny went out. Could it be binding internally causing it to click earlier that it should. has anyone had a cable act like this. How much does the tv cable cost from the dealer?

Just read another thread. supposedly they are in about 15$ from the dealer.... in abouts.. probably closer to 30... but that is a decent price for saving the tranny..

I had this problem before but mine was where the TV goes on the transmission, the cable housing was broken and even though the cable seemed to work and had tension on it the cable was not really working. try taking the entire cable off and make sure its not damaged , you would findout if it's in a bind also.

1) THE FIRST ONE THE CABLE IS SET TO WHERE IT SHIFTS FINE BUT I CANT GO WOT WITH OUT IT CLICKING TO MANY TIMES

2) THE SECOND ONE IS THE CABLE ADJUST THE PROPER WAY WITH CABLE PULLED TO THE FIRE WALL AND THE PRESSING THE GAS TO WOT.

COULD ANYONE TAKE A PIC OF THERES SET CORRECTLY, IF YOU LOOK ON THE PICS U CAN SEE THE CONE PART. HOW MUCH DOES IT STICK OUT ON YOUR CARS? ]1[/URL] ]2[/URL]COULD ANYONE TAKE A PIC OF THERES SET CORRECTLY
