Need some tranny help

Okay guys, when I bought my Camaro a few weeks ago I knew it had a tranny leak. It is a small leak but a leak none the less.

Well I finally have had time to clean it all up and try to find where it is coming from and it looks like there are 2 areas.

This picture is not of mine it is something I grabbed from the internet, but will help explain I hope.

L1:
Looks like it is leaking from around this cover.
What is this cover?
Is there a gasket or seal that should be installed there?
It looks like they beat the hell out of the cover with a hammer and screwdriver to get it on, is there a way to remove and replace WITHOUT dropping the trans?

L2:
Looks like it might be leaking between the speedo housing and trans.
Is there a gasket or seal there also?
Looks like that can be done WITHOUT dropping the trans, is this correct?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Dirk

hi, the speedo housing does have a seal that can be replaced. the other place is the govenor cover and it has a seal also. both shoould be able to be changed without dropping te tranny. but when you do the govenor cover, you will see why it looks beat on.

Is beating the governer cover on the ONLY way?

So do I have to drain the tranny to replace both seals??

i usually use a punch instead of a screwdriver. it is more like tapping it on. it isn't like a full swing with the hammer. it is similar to taking the cap off the wheel bearing nut, just not as much room.

govenor and servo are not the same thing. you may be able to lower the cross member to get to the top of the govenor cover.

I suppose that is why I was SO freakin' confused when I popped the governor cover and could not for the life of me figure out how to put the Vette servo I had in there

So is there a seal for the governor cover or just RTV??

Thanks.

the servo is on the passenger side just behind the cooler lines.....lol. make sure you have all the seals for it as well. warning, that servo is a mother pati to get in. be careful and make sure it engages the band. if it doesn't, you won't have second and fourth.

the govenor cover has an o-ring seal. i have never tried using rtv to seal it although i have seen it done when we take the trannies apart at work.

Thanks Jeff, any other tips on the servo install?

Most likely will have to wait until next weekend, I also need to get an o-ring for the governor cover the RTV I was forced to use is not really working.

Had the car up on the rack today getting an exhaust put in, man is it depressing looking up at all the freakin' leaks (trans AND oil).

yeah, get some vasoline. i'm not kidding. lube the o-rings for the servo before you try to put it in. it will make it easier. the vasoline is just like the assembly lube the builders use. might try to do it while you have the crossmember lowered to give you more room

if you have a z28, don't be suprised if you already have a vette servo installed. vettes weren't the only things that had them.

Thanks, I have the RS.

I need to remove the cross member all together to replace the speedo housing o-ring and tranny mount (the previous owner had a damn solid mount on there).

While I am in there should I get one of the Mega Valves?

What about a shift kit?

i would have used a poly mount.

what is a mega valve? i'm not familiar with the term.

the shift kit will depend on what you want. it can be done by removing the valve body. no need to remove the whole tranny. i personally like the one from transgo.

Jeff,

Sounds like you know what you're talking about.

I have the 2.8l on my 88 RS Camaro.

I have a couple of leaks in the trans so I need to fix those and while I am in there I figured I might as well "tune it up some" I am not looking for anything major, just a little quicker shifts and a little more performance but still on the medium side.

I was looking at the different shift kits from B&M was thinking of the middle Transpak one seems pretty easy to install and for $50 not to bad on the wallet, that combined with the Vette servo should make me notice something is different right?

I have also seen the Transgo Jr. kit I think it is called looks like it is $25, I think the lowest B&M Shift Improver kit is about the same price and looks like it is just a seperator plate or something like that.

As for the valve here is a description from a site that sells them:

700R4 Mega Valve. The Mega Valve will increase your fluid pressure and firm up all your shifts. This is the one you've heard about. Comes in two sizes .471" for firm shifts and .500" for extra firm shifts. Can be installed without removing the transmission or valve body. Cost $15.00
You can check it out here:
http://www.transmissionhead.com/

I want to keep this on the cheap side and still feel a little performance, and most important want to keep it RELIABLE.

Would the low end shift kits be a safe bet, along with the vette servo and call it good?

All advise welcomed.

i'm not real familiar with the b&m shift kits. i get mine at work. the transgo jr. is more for a stock upgrade. you won't feel much difference with it. but then again, you have the 2.8. the .471 valve you will notice a difference. i have the .500 in mine. the .471 valve with vette servo and the transgo jr. would probably be good with your motor. if you decide to drop a 350 in there at some point, you might want to go with a full race kit. those you will really feel.

were do you live if you don't mind me asking

I am in Napa, Ca.

What Transgo would you recommend?

Right now I don't plan on a 350, BUT I did not plan to do axle swaps on my Jeep and go with a long arm suspension when I bought it either.

ok, i don't know any tranny parts places out there except slauson. were are you getting your parts from?

the transgo jr.(also called victor jr. i think) along with your vette servo and valve will do good with your current set-up. or one of the b&m shift kits, either the improver or the transpack would do good. you don't need a full race shift kit for the motor you have. if you start doing a bunch of power mods, then you might want to consider it.

I got my vette servo from:
http://www.bulkpart.com/Merchant2/me...T&Store_Code=2

They have been helpful. I have used Slauson to get a new tail housing for my 42RE trans in the Jeep.

I also have a comercial account at the local Kragens (store manager is in one of my Jeep clubs ).

I think I can have them order just about anything and not have to pay for shipping. I know they can get B&M stuff and I assume Transgo, Transgo is what I had put in my Jeep tranny and it seems pretty good.

ok, kool. stick with them(were you got your servo) or slauson. i don't know what kragens is. we don't have one here in hillbilly land.....lol.that first link you listed, the prices are way to high on stuff that most of it can be bought at any tranny parts place. compare prices at kragens with other places. if they are about the same and you have a hook-up on shipping, go with it. i love transgo. might be a little more complicated but worth it in my opinion.

Thanks.

Kragens is like Pep Boys, Checker, AutoZone, Napa, etc. Just a general parts store.

I figure the $25 Transgo kit can't be that much more difficult to install than the equiv. B&M, will just have to check on the pricing for all this crap. Hopefully with the kit, servo, valve, and no more leaks I will be in good shape and then it is off to finding and repairing the oil leaks I have.

Does it never end???

Where did you get all your poly bushings? I too need to replace most of mine and might as well do the tourque arm and tranny while I have them all apart.

tranny mount i actually picked up at autozone i think. it was enrgy suspension. the torque arm mount may have been from summitt. all the others are a kit that i got from performance suspension technology(pst). had them for years and love them. the motor mounts are energy suspension from summitt but i think i have seen them at pep boys and auto zone as well.

and NO, it never ends. i have to buy an ecm cuz mine just went downhill.

I was looking at the kit from PST also, looks pretty complete.

I will have to check with my guy and see what he can order up for me.

Thanks.

no problem

Another item came up while I was looking for a boost valve, it is a .293 low/reverse boost valve.

Is this worth adding along with the .471 boost valve and transgo Jr. shift kit, and Vette servo?

Thanks.

you can although you will only notice it in low 1 and 2. in regular drive, it doesn't do much.

I have a tendancy to shift mine like a manual so might be worth the $10 while I am dinking around anyway.

One of the next big things I want to get is the B&M Megashifter, that way I get the ratchet action, had that in one of my old Chevy trucks and it was really nice.

no tougher than the .500 boost valve since it goes in before the boost valve. it should look something like this. i will try to find a pic that shows all the parts seperately.

So I have to pull the valve body, install the shift kit, then install the valves, then button everything up.

Any pix you have would be great.

I was actually refering to the megashift install.

oh, sorry. the mega shifter was relatively easy. you will have to get a switch from radio shack or somewhere(b&m will give you the part number in the instructions). just takes time and patience. you will need a way to cut out your stock shifter plate, wiring connectors(female and butt) to rewire the nuetral switch provided cuz you won't need yours anymore. just follow the directions. they are pretty self explanatory.

no, just the shadetree type.....lol. i work in a transmission parts place. so i see alot of stuff. but we don't carry the b&m shift kits. that is the main reason i tried transgo to begin with. but it is a great kit.

btw, what is collieo? maybe i'm just not pronouncing it correctly but it is not a familiar term to me. please pardon my ignorance on it.

all the stuff we have talked about so far with the exception of the b&m shift kits, i have installed myself in either my tranny or a friends.

yeah, but by the time you paid shipping, the discount would be pointless. if you can get the parts locally, that would be the way to go.

discount only like 10%
