I just got this car running, and took it around the block and found the tranny won't shift out of 1st. I even hit it a little to rev the engine up to see if it would shift and stayed in 1st. Tried manual shifting and still nothing.

1988 Z28 305 TPI Auto...

Also seems a little sluggish going in gear like slipping and even in reverse.

Is my tranny shot or is there an electric connection or vac line that could be causing this?

Thanks!

Remove the governor and inspect the gear. Replace it if nescessary. If you do not know what, or where, the governor is, it is best to take it to a trans shop.

No I don't know what or where the gov. is but I have worked on many intricate things requiring a dial indicator and lot of patients, being a tech in the marine biz...but that makes me no expert on trannys. Would this be something a seasoned mechanic could do never opening a tranny before?

Does this require pulling the tranny?

If you are not scared you can do it easily. You know your abilities better than I do. Sounds like you will easily figure it out. Scroll down the trans section. I posted detailed info that will directly apply to your problem. The post starts with: Car will not shift, or something like that. Have a look.

The thread was the one where the guy started loosing gears i believe had a description of exactly where to locate it and how to check it.

scroll about 1/2 way down the page, thats about where they get into the governer.

Thanks 84z

Pulled my governor today and the gear and springs looked fine...

What else could it be, at this point would it be better to pull it apart or would it be better to buy a low mile good one?

Be sure to check the valve in the center of the governor. It should move freely when the weights are squeezed.

I didn't examine the valve, I guess I didn't see one. Did see the springs and the thing just flopped around like it was centrifugally driven. Is this correct or this worn out?

ah ha. well this thread seems hot and mine seems to have died so i will write about it here. i got it out and it was fine which pissed me off. but i now i tried squeezing the sides together where the springs are and nothing moves. they just open and close. could you better explain what i should be looking for. there really is no movement, so i think thats the problem. by the way i found a place that selsl these assemblies. heres a link.

With the gear facing up, squeeze the weights in and out. The valve in the center will(or should) move up at least.025. If not, disassemble, polish and reassemble, and reinstall. Or you could buy a new one.

yea no movement at all. i tried just moving the weights and actually pushing the spring to tighten up, because they didnt when i moved the weights. no matter what i do the valve in the middle does not move at all. there is a marking on it and it stays in place no matter what i do. a new ones only 21 shipped, so whatever. i will take it apart for fun though im so happy it isnt more serious.

i found a performance setup on ebay for 40 though, should i go with that or is it ? heres a link if you need it.

this guy also sells a lot of other good tranny parts if you are looking. do you guys think it would be worth it to grab some of his parts while im at it? theyre pretty cheap, i mean corvette servo, .500 boost vlave, spring and pistons, all for like 15 a pop. seems worth it. just gotta find time to put it in

ok i got the new governor. i must not have been looking at the right part on the old one...because what i thought was the valve does not move on the new one either. what exactly is the valve and what exactly should it do?

EDIT: O! now i see it. on my old one the thing slides around a whole lot more than the new one, and its like stuck and then falls loose...raises way more than the new one too. i think this should be it. how much atf do you think i lostby opening the cap before?

sticking upshift valve or 1-2 shift valve in the valve body, 2-4 band not engaging. the only way i know for the tv cable to keep it from shifting is if it is adjusted to far towards the firewall. pushing the gas pedal to the floor would take care of this. so i doubt that the tv cable is the problem.
