Shifting Problems

When I drive my car, it takes a long time for the gear to shift from 1st to 2nd, but any other shifting does normally. Do you think this can be a modulator problem? ( I think that's what the piece on the side of the transmission is called). Let me know all suggestions.

unless you have put a th350 or th400 un there, '89 came with a th700r4 which doesn't have a modulator. have you checked your fluid level? or tried adjusting the tv cable?

The fluid level is alright. I'm not a transmission expert, so this may sound like a dumb question. Where is the tv cable and how do you adjust it? Also, what is its purpose?

the tv cable controls throttle pressure inside the transmission which helps in determining the shift points. it is actuated by the throttle lever on the throttle body. this link has just about all the info you need.

it is the same procedure for a tpi unit. the only thing i would recomend is that when it says to use the throttle lever to adjust it, instead use the gas pedal by pushing it to the floor as far as it will go.
