im gonna be buyin a new rear next wee. the guy claims its got aftermarket ring and carrier in it. supposedly its got a auburn posi and richmond 3.73s. before i lay down any cash for this im gonna pop it open to make sure everything is correct. my question is how do i identify the 3.73s. also is there anything i should check inside the rear when i pop the cover off to make sure its all in good shape.

Count the number of teeth on the ring and pinion gears...


Check for deposits of metal shavings on the bottom of the axle housing and in the oil. Look around for any visible cracks on the carrier.

 

how many teeth will be on the ring. ive heard it was 41 but im not to sure.

Divide the number of teeth on the ring gear by the number of teeth on the pinion.

 

ok heres my next question. the carrier and gears are installed in the rear and the rear is fully assembled from rotor to rotor. i kno ill b able to count the teeth on the ring but will i b able to see the teeth on the pinion?

A very simple method....All gear MFG stamp the gear ratio on the OD of the ring gear. So the gear & pinion count for 3:73 ratio is 41-11.
