I was amazed to find out what transmission was in my car

I was researching drive and driven gears for my car. In the process I found out that my 1992 has a 4L60 tranny and not the TH700R4 like I thought.

Is this odd?

Also, in the GM system, it looks like these are the same except for the numbers.

OR

The 700R4 does not use a VSS like the 4L60 does.

This should be a good conversation!!!

The new naming scheme is more consistent and systematic. The first digit indicates the number of forward gears, the second letter describes the orientation (longitudinal or transverse), the final digits indicate the nominal strength, and an E is appended to indicate electronic instead hydraulic control.

No, the 4L60 is not electronic. The 4L60E is.

Yes, we know that.

They changed the name. Nothing else. The actual parts are all the same.

The auxiliary valve body came in before the name change.

these guys are correct. the 700R4 recieved a name change in 1988 to the 4L60. this was simply done because this is how GM was to name their transmissions in the future.

Example: 4L60

4=4 forward gears
L=longitudinal (rwd)
60=torque rating system GM made for themselves

Another example: 4T60E
4=4 forward gears
T=transaxle (fwd)
60=torque rating
E=electronicly shifted

i don't know what you mean by close? the 60E has been in many trucks well past 6000gvw. i listed it right. if you're going on my second listing, i listed a 4T60E which is the front wheel drive version. that 60E also doesn't go into a 6000gvw ride. i listed everything correct.
