Rear End Number ID?
I'm going to buy a rear-end from a local guy here in Georgia, I just want to make sure it's the right rear for me.. He sent me pictures today, and I'll link to them later in this thread, but..
The numbers on the housing are:
GM N
225522876
LQ23
I can't seem to find anything relative to these numbers, but I hope this is a 3.42 Posi Rear from a 91-ish Camaro.
So, what do you think? (scroll down for the pictures).

Those numbers are just casting numbers. They don't mean much. The picture shows a 10 bolt with disk brakes. It's got PBR calipers.
The numbers you want are stamped on the front of the passenger tube near the center section. They're normally hard to find or to read but they're always there.

Because my Haynes manual doesn't list the 8 digit GM part number, I can't confirm that. However, it does list axles by a 3 character casting number. So that axle should also have 2PN on it somewhere if it is(or originally was) a '90-'92 3.42 posi.
One obvious thing, it has the later-style PBR disc brake system, so that's a good sign.

That number is just the casting number of the center section. It contains the somewhat useful information, that it's a pre-ABS F-body rear end. 82-9whatever. So OK. I think it has an extra 2 in it though.
If you want to know what the gears and stuff are, take off the cover and look. Don't waster your time and effort on a bunch of "codes". The parts are what they are, and people change parts all the time, without updating the codes.
I can tell you though, out of all 92 Z28s, the ONLY ones that would have come with a 3.42 posi, are 305 TPI 5-speed cars with G92. No 350 cars, and no auto 305 cars, would have had that gear. There were probably less than 2000 of those made per year. Therefore the odds that that's what that is, are astronomically against you. Don't get your hopes all up.
And ABOVE ALL, DO NOT pay 3.42 posi prices, until you pop the cover and look!!! Otherwise, it will surely morph itself back into the 2.73 one-wheel-peel unit that most of those rears would have come with, somewhere along the ride home. Maybe 15% or so of them would have had 3.23 posi, which is better than the 2 series. Around 2%, or less, have what you're thinking you're looking at. The numbers are heavily against you.

I guess I should have told you what I was going to do with it.
I'm going to put a T2R in there and turn this into my race rear end (to replace my 9bolt). So, as long as the axles are 28 spline and the gears are good, i'm OK.
This is a road racing and autocross car, so I know that I'll need to get involved with C-Clip eliminators and the sort.
Anyway, I hope to build a rear-end that can handle 300+ HP and will hook up better than a 9bolt. The SCCA rules that I run under require that I have a 82-92 camaro rear end to start with, and I'm hoping it fits the bill.

Guys,
The rear end that I was going to purchase was stolen from the shop just before I picked it up (boo hoo!). I've found a new one from a board member here, going to pick it up next week.
Can somebody tell me which Axle tube codes to look for when I pick up the rear end?
I am hoping that it is a 1990, 10-Bolt, Disc, Posi unit with 3.23 gears from an AUTOMATIC TRANNY car. I believe the RPO numbers are G80, GU5 and G92. Please translate that to axle tube codes so I can verify it when I pick it up.
Thanks in advance,
Brian

Hi Brian...I can assure you thats its a 3.23 gear 1990 10 bolt PBR brake posi rear. Its the original one from my 90 iroc 350 auto car. And its for sure a posi the 406 makes a lot of torque and it spins both tires alot.
I bought the car stock with 86,000 miles. I can show you the codes in my glove box.
I think the pbr 10 bolts only came with 3.23 350 cars and 3.42s for the 305 cars. When you come i can spin the rear for you and show you its a 3.23. The yoke will spin 3 1/4 times while the axel will spin once.
Dont worry...
I will see ya Tues or weds. Have fun at Bush gardens they have added a lot of new things so it should be a lot of fun for you guys.
Any questions just ask.
Mike

Thanks man! It's not that I don't trust you, i've just spent money before on things that were not as advertised (NOT ON THIS BOARD), and I'm a bit paranoid.
People on this board (and Z28.com and ffrax.com) have been AWESOME and I would have sold my car years ago out of frustration if not for this community.
Thanks Mike, See you either tuesday or tuesday.

I could tell you a few stories about parts i bought from ebay. They are the worst.
Ive found this board to be one the most honest groups of people. Compared to others.
Some people have no morals, few hundred dollars are worth more then there word.
I think i will work late monday and friday though.
