t5 problem uk

its me again ... with another problem...

i have a 1988 camaro with a t5 manual box... problem is that it needs a rebuild and it looks expensive!!!! i am based in the uk and the bits are comming to over £1000... + labour and its hard to source the parts as well.....

i have heard that the t5 box was used in mustangs and the cozys siera/escort etc... but i understand that there are different varients with different ratios... but are they maybe another option for me???

from looking at the posts on this forum the t5 box is not the most reliable of boxes... with this in mind and the fact that i would like to use the car for track tarmac racing i am looking at the posiblility of a performance upgrade.... the way i look at it is if i need to spend that sort of money for a standard box i might as well go the whole hog... i am thinking straight cut gears??? will they be too noisey???? but are there any other options...is there anyone that can help me with ideas. . . . is there anyone in the uk that specialises in these cars in the uk that could supply the box???? trouble is that the box is out now at a garage that i know, so i am too far in to it know to pull out so to speak????? would love to hear from fellow camaro buffs in the uk if poss......

i know that there was a iroc on a test day at brands hatch the other he would be an interesting person to talk to....

look forward to hearing from you all

thanks again...

There's more to their various variations than just gear ratios. Each model of vehicle that they've been used in, has different mounting arrangements, bolt patterns, shifter location, splines, and so forth. In short, they're all exactly the same, except that they're completely different and non-interchangeable.

If you have a V8 and you seriously intend to beat on it at all, which autocrossing would definitely qualify as, it's probably not worthwhile to try to fix it. It will be spending ALOT of time under the knife.

A better idea would be to locate a T-56 out of a 94-97 V8 Camaro or Firebird. They swap in without too dreadfully much effort, and that box is many times more likely to survive, than any T-5 will ever be. Just find a used one; they hardly ever tear up in those cars, so the odds are in your favor that any one you come across will be in working condition. Just BE SURE to get EVERY POSSIBLE piece from the donor car; that would include the transmission, bell housing, clutch, flywheel, drive shaft (not necessarily needed but you might end up with an aluminum one), hydraulics, and shifter. A 98 or newer WILL NOT work, and a 93 is less desirable but would work if it's all you can find.
