1988 Firebird

I have a 1988 Trans Am and the 700r4 has died. I can possibly get an 88 firebird very cheap that has a 2.8 with a knocking rod, but the tranny is good. I just don't know if it will be the same as what is in the Trans Am. Did GM make the 700r4 in the V6 models weaker than the V8 models? I need to know soon so I can pick up this car before it is sold.

the bell housing is different and the v-6 models were weaker.

That is a shame, because I could pick up the car for 500 OBO. It would have been a good deal as I could probably get 300 for the body after I took the tranny.
