For a point of reference, what are expecting to pay for the Eaton unit?

It's not an "is"; it's a "was".

Those were the stock units they took out of Z28s that they were upgrading to SSs, so they could put in a heavier-duty unit.

They have long since run out. All gone. There will never be any more, unless the SS program or the equivalent, starts up again someday when/if the Camaro is re-introduced; and if it has the same 7½" rear in it. I'd say there's spme pretty long odds against it.

Everybody wants something for "cheap". And they don't want to pay alot either. But sometimes things just cost what they cost. You wanna play you gotta pay.

I dont know what rear you have but check out the Detroit TrueTrac. It is a limited slip that uses gears instead of clutches. Got mine for 365 through summit. They have them for both 26 and 28 splines.

Actually it's $479, http://store.summitracing.com/partde...8&autoview=sku.

Try www.justdifferentials.com or www.gearsrus.com, they both sell it for $399.

The Zexel-Torsen take-off posi's (T-2) still show up every now and then on Ebay and www.cz28.com. However they fetch a price higher than the $99. New they cost about $389.

U can check out the Auburn posi as well.

Some people here have a love hate over Auburn/Eaton posi's, but I'm not hardcore either way.

Seen them both die and seen them both live :-)

Eaton is easier to rebuild however, but for like $150 Auburn will reman your posi for you also.

Have an Auburn in my Formula and quite happy with it thus far.

later

Best way on the cheap is to keep an eye on ebay for guys parting out 4th gens. They'll have less miles and will be 28 spline. What used to sell for $99 used are now going for $150-250 unless you get lucky and score one in a junkyard. But it seems lately that everyone out there is snatching them up and driving the prices through the roof.

Do some research in to the Lincoln and Miller Posi conversions. They use all factory parts with only minor modifications, and the conversion is pretty cheap. It's not quite as streetable as an Eaton, or Torsen, but for the price, who's complaining. It used to be pretty common back in the day, expecially on local roundy round cars.

I know that you said Summit, but Jeg's carries a better selection of Auburn differrentials.

Which one do you want? The High Performance Series or the Pro Series?

The first thing you guys need to know is that if you're buying a brand new eaton or auburn posi, the hell with summit and jegs. They're both way too expensive. I bought a brand new eaton posi with the one year manufacturers warranty from an ebay seller, and saved quite a chunk of change over the mail order joints. I paid $339.00 for it versus $450-500 from summit or jegs. I also bought a zexel-torsen takeoff carrier with a 3.42 gearset included from a guy on there for about $150. Quite frankly, I'm surprised the mail order places aren't starting to lose a lot of business these days. Who knows, maybe they are and we just don't hear much about it yet.

Yes, www.gearsrus.com (who I mentioned in my first post) sells on Ebay under the username diff-man. $339 sounds like last year's prices. The price now is $389. Pat, who do you buy from on Ebay?

I still think a used take-off unit is this guy's best bet for a cheaper posi.

BTW, what rear differential is the current Chevy Colorado using?

Actually, the $339 I quoted was for the 12 bolt eaton, and it's gone up to $348 now. The seller I bought it from is 589gear. He doesn't have any 7.5" eatons listed right now, but last time he did, they were around $370 IIRC. He can probably get them if asked. I actually have diff-man in my favorites list on ebay as well, and he does have the best price out of the auctions running right now. Even at $390, you're saving quite a bit over summit or jegs. Another ebay seller that carries good rearend stuff is Lotsoffun77. I'm going to buy a ring and pinion installation kit from him that has the premium timken bearings, and the adjustable, interlocking carrier shims for like $82. He can also get the solid spacer kits, which are highly recommended for the 7.5" ten bolt rears.

But yeah, I have to agree, a zexel-torsen take out unit is easily the cheapest route to getting a decent posi. Note that I say "decent". You could always buy one of the eaton "gov-lock" units that everyone and their dog sells on ebay, but there's a damn good reason the slang term for them is "grenade-lock".
