Is that the same trans that came in the 4gens??

I think the manual is the same. But the automatic is newer. Talking about the '06 GTO.

I'm not sure though.

Axle/Gears: 9-bolt w/ 3.23's
Its likely a T-56, but the similarities probably end there. It' be made to bolt up to the later generation V8's, wont have a TA mount, will probably have a different case, etc.

I thought the center case/section with all the guts was the same for all T-56s (mustang, viper, camaro/bird, etc) but they just had different input/output shafts, bellhousings, and tail shafts, not to mention gear ratios and higher quality components in some cases (like viper). Kinda like the LS1 trans can be made to work with a L98/LT1 car, you just have to change a few things.

Could be wrong though. Also, no clue of the GTO uses a t-56 but I'm sure google could answer that.
