What are the major diffs in these trannys? As far as electronics, mounting
and the such? Did a search and read that the cooling lines were different.
Was wondering about ANY diffs as I want to put an 89 700r4 in place of the
94 4L60E is there going to be any probs or am I pissing up a rope? This is not 3rd gen but this is the best place I know of for info on any G.M. vehicles!!!
The 89 was to go into my 3rd gen but the wife needs her van more at this point in time, I'll just have to rebuild my 700r4 from my GTA.
TGO rules!!!!!!!

The 700R4 and 4L60E are basically the same trannys except for the electronics which will need to be ran either by the computer or stand alone unit. A stand alone unit is the only way to go in a third gen or any other vehicle that didnt come with the 4L60E. The 4L60E is does support more power(700R4 stock vs. 4L60E stock). Most of the parts are transferable to each unit such as gears, plantries, etc except for the governors, torque converter, and a few more things. The valve bodies are also different but improved over the 700R4 design. Hope this helps a little.

Thanks Yenko you have helped me out some but I need more if ya
got any. What the attempt is, is that my wifes 94 van "4L60E" took a
sh** and I have an 89 chevy van with the 700r4 that I was going to
put into my GTA after I beefed it up of course, back to the prob, I
wanted to put the 700 in the 94 van in place of the 4L60E but I didn't
know if that was possible, if not I guess I'll be able to get one in my car before her, NOT GOOD, anything else you can think of? I am positive that
the 89 is a lockup tranny and that is computer controlled, is that the comp
control you were talking about? Or is there some other ?

no, in the 4l60e, all the shifting is computer controlled. on the 700r4, only the lock-up is. the 4l60e also doesn't use a throttle cable, the 700r4 does. failure to use the throttle cable properly will toast a 700r4. if both tranny's are v-8 models, the torque convertors will interchange. i also believe the vehicle speed sensor setup is different for the 4l60e and the computer requires this info to operate the vehicle properly.

You are correct on the torque converters.......Yank told me that the 93-97 camaro torque converters would work but not the LS1 or 98 and up torque converters.....different design all together. On a separate note, the VSS is what makes the 4L60e shift....the vss is the governor essentially and sends data to the computer allowing for the shifts at part/WOT/lockup/etc where as the 700r4 has a governor gear and tells the tranny when to shift internally. There is a TV cable on the 4L60E trannys from 1993 to 1999 in the C1500/Tahoe/etc but I don't know if the LT1 had one or not....I'm pretty sure they had one as well considering the throttle body is made for that piece. Also, I do know that the corvette servos will interchange to each tranny as well.Originally Posted by 87zjeff

List of things that I know is different:
1)Oil pan/gaskets/filter is a different shape
2)Electronics....4L60e is a electronic controlled tranny where the 700r4 uses the computer to lockup the torque converter
3)valve bodies are a little bit different in design but same concept
4)Governors(4L60e uses the VSS)

The 4L60E in my wagon uses the TPS sensor instead of a TV Cable.
no 4l60E uses a throttle valve cable. the 4l60(late 700r4) does, but not the 4l60e. i apologize for the mis-wording in my previous post.
on a side note....all the pan gaskets are the same. only the 4x4 trucks and such used a deeper pan. all 2wd cars used the same pan on the 700r4/4l60e unless someone has changed the pan.

Ok.....i didn't know about the cars....I know the trucks are different though. The oil pan gasket/tranny filter from a 4l60e won't go on my 700r4.Originally Posted by 87zjeff

Man thanks yenko, 87z, blu91!!! you guys are so right about the 4L60E
it's sick. I spent the day pulling 2 trannys and you all are correct on all
accounts, I noticed that there was a different type of sensor for the vehicle speed sending unit, in the same place but totally different, the 700r was a
gear driven application while the 4L60E there was like a magnet and it was totally covered in fine metal "looked like a flower" trans was shot never seen so many metal fines B4
. I also noticed that there was no kickdown cable and the one connector was totally different from the 4 plug style of the 700 for the lockup convertor.
So if I read the replies correctly I can use the torque convertor from the
89 700r in the 4L60E? And the 4L60E from the 94 3/4 ton van did not have the tv cable, maybe the Tahoe does but not the one I pulled.
Once again the knowledge on this site never ceases to amaze!!

the tranny filter won't work but the pan gasket is the same bolt pattern.
