Before installing new rear end should I...

I'm swapping rear ends and was wondering if regular paint would hold up or if something else would be in order?
Thanks,
Will

I just got done with my 9 bolt build, and I went ahead and used gloss black engine enamel, or hi heat I cant remember. either way, Id say use just use some sort of high heat spray paint. just make sure you clean the crap out of the surface and roughen it up a little with like some 150 grit sandpaper. Theres more than likely alot of oil and grease on the rear thats gathe over the years, so just make sure you get all of it off so you dont have to do it all over when the paint peels off.

unless im wrong which i prolly am,. then why is paint such a factor? im about to do the same thing as far as a swap goes for my rear end on my 91 r/s. and the only thing im worryd about is running into problems im hopeing this swap is alot easier then the automatic transmissions i have been installing??any one know if replacing a rear is any harder?

well first off, there are alot of people who paint their rear ends. Some just dont like building up, or even swapping in, a rear thats greasy and rusty lookin. Paintin it just gives it a cleaner look.

As far as swappin rears, it depends on what rear you got. THe main concern for the most part is te brake system. If your goin from drum to disc or vice-versa, there might be a little more involved. If its drum-drum rear swap, majority of the time its just a matter of R&I.

I just want to clean it up and make it look nice. I don't want to have to do it twice, thats why I asked.
As for swaping rears its pretty easy, they are not held in by much. I removed the one I want to paint last night in about an hour or so. Just a tip, use small tires or a floor jack to get out/in from under the car.

I painted my 12 bolt with some high heat (500 degree) black engine enamel.

Painted mine with regular gloss black paint, no problems. Did the same on another vehicle which goes in the snow every year and the parts that scrape the snow are nice shiny bare metal now hehe.
