Knockin Noise From My Trans

Hi all,
i have a 305 V8 with the original Trans in it (Over Drive) and when ever i put it in any gear apart from P or N it clunks into gear and wants to go (basicly it jurks the car forward or back stronger than normal) think it could be the bands? should i get the thing rebuilt, i live in the UK so anit easy for to get another one, but i got my hands on a second hand one, but that anit been drivin for over 6years any ideas would be great.

I read that there are two main reasons for that clunking sound when you put the car in gear. One is that you may need to replace your U-joints found at either end of the driveshaft. The U-joints are the thingys between the driveshaft transmission and differential.

The other main reason is that you may have to tune your engine.
