Ok ive got a 305 carb'd and a 700r4... The shifter wont work right, if it goes into park good, i cant get it into 1st "all the way back" but if i adjust it to hit 1st, then P is R
Im pretty sure the guy who swapped the motor, and trans used the wrong bracket on the trans... Does anyone have a pic of the real 700 bracket? Even hooked up to the trans, so i can see what it looks like hooked up?

The shifter cable is a set length. The only adjustment is in the shifter arm attached to the tranny, and then there's only maybe 1/2 inch. I don't think there is any other shifter arm that would work on the tranny, so I don't think it got replaced wrong.
Make sure that the bracket that holds the cable is not broken. Make sure it has the retaining clip installed (it's a spring clip, U shaped). You might try replacing the cable, if all else fails - they are about $30. They tend to fray and get ruined inside on the tranny end, inside the sheathing where you can't see it.
A new bracket is available at the dealer if needed, it wasn't that much, but I don't remember the cost.
If you replace, make sure that any twisting you do to the cable to get it aligned for install is done in a clockwise fashion - this will keep it from fraying inside and ruining yet another cable. I made the mistake of twisting a new cable about 3/4 of a turn in the wrong direction, and ruined it by doing so.

its not the cable, im sure... when i pull it into 1st the arm on the trans, where the cable end bolts to is almost a str8 line, so when i try to shift up "2nd" it wont go, cause its pushing a str8 line, i think to arm on the trans is wrong... I will get a pic of it, tom. when its light....

Read the thread SLOWER, my trans works perfect... But i cant get the shifter to go through all gears P-R-N-OD-D-2-1 because i think the shifter arm is the wrong one, i can adjust it to shift into park, but then i cant get it to go into 1st... Thats y i need a pic of someone elses, so i can see if the arm i have is the same...
anyhow, either your linkage is wrong/adjusted wrong or the cable has too much slack.

I have sorta the same problem. only mine hits all gears and will not go into park.. period... has been like that since the trans replacement. even tried the old braket off the original trans.. hits every gear but is about an inch to short to get to park.. perhaps we have the same problem... I wonder if it is caused by the cable flexing somewhere instead of pushing straight out..

Going into PARK is where the most force is required - if you disconnect the shifter cable from the tranny, and move the lever on the tranny by hand, you'll see what I mean.
A problem with PARK sounds definitely like a bad cable - all my cable problems were same - couldn't go into park. The cable, in comparison to the rest of the shifting mechanisms, is like any other cable - it's a string - try sticking a kite string into a straw - it's impossible because the string (or cable) is flexible, and you can't push it. Going into PARK takes the most force or pressure to push the string through the straw, and thus is where you usually get the first sign of weakness within the cable. The cable can be frayed or broken on the inside and you'll never know it until you take it apart to see, then you've ruined it by taking it apart.
For the "park" problem - get a new cable.
And I learned the hard way (after 3 replacements) - don't waste $35 on junk from Autozone - spend the $70 and get the Chevy dealer cable - it's built much better and well worth the extra.
