Can I adjust shift points with the TV cable??

I read all the tech articles on this, but i was wondering what kind of adjustments i can make. The car has a shift kit and shifts hard, but when i WOT from a dead stop the motor is ringing out to 6000 RPM before it shifts. Im using the stock tach, and the motor doesn't really fall on its face after 5000rpm. It just seems like im going 500rpm higher than it should be. With a mild L98 where should it be shifting? The car feels great and snappy at part throttle when it drops down a gear..

The TV cable has one and only one correct position. Anything other than proper will get you a burnt up trans in a hurry.

Adjust it as per the many guides and websites and see how it shifts.

you can adjust the shift points with the TV, but you can also burn up the trans doing so.

If you have a 6,000rpm WOT shift point, you probably have the Corvette style governor. To get to a 5,000rpm WOT shift point, you will need a standard V-8 governor.

the weird thing is the car used to shift at 5200 or so. Now it revs to 6000. How accurate is the factory tach? It doesnt really fall off in power after 5000 like i think it would.

factory tachs can be out anywhere from a few hundred RPM to a few thousand...

Some people can change governor springs, and file the weights as well, to get the optimum shift point. This however, is a time consuming process. Make a change, run the car, make another change, run the car, etc. A bit pain to R/R the governor after every test run. I just manually shift my car, but, it would be nice to let the trans do the work in a 1/4 mile run.

Good point. Mine is out by a few hundred. I rely on a aftermarket shift light.

Please for the love of an about to be destroyed 700R4, DON'T use the TV cable for anything other than its intended purpose, to tell the transmission what position the throttle is in. TV system controls line pressure and a whole lot of other stuff. Incorrectly (that is, ANY other position than the calibrated setting) setting it with the intention of changing shift points, letting the tranny hold the gear longer, increasing fuel economy, etc. WILL destroy it. There are other means as above.

It's probably your tach. The governor springs and weights are the only proper way to set the shift points.
- Every vette governor I've ever been around shifted right around 5200.....
