NEED HELP! Transmission Decision...

Sooo, I think someone really really hates me. Or something. Just get my car back home after 4 months, and the transmission dies. My car no longer goes forward, but reverse is still there. All the gears are pretty much shot now.
So, my question basically is can I rebuild an automatic to handle the power/torque from a very built 383 for about $400 and be happy with it, or should I go manual? How much is the average T56, and how much would the conversion cost supposing I do all labor myself (and I will.) Basically I'm trying to figure out if I want to drop the transmission this week/weekend and get it rebuilt or wait about a month and do the manual conversion, but money is still an issue. If I can get this manual rebuilt and still have it shift decently and hold up under the engine I'll go that route, unless its 600$, then I supose I could drop about $1k on the manual. If anyone has delt with the conversion and/or rebuilding of a manual some names of companies and costs and isms would be great. Thanks for the help,
Nick

Considering most"built" 700's go for $1,500-$2,000 or more, Hoping to do it for $400 is a very tall order to fill. If you do it yourself, $400 in parts will buy you quite a bit, if you shop around.

I can do parts on my own, and Maybe... maybe rebuild it my own. But I have no idea where to start with an auto vs a manual. or a manual for that matter. Never messed with tranny's much before... so yea. Say I do pick up 400 inparts, will this 'built' tranny hold up, and offer the quickness needed? Thanks for the input so far, we'll see how its gonna go.

Ok , so $1000C.. I can manage that kind of money, ( in us currency of course) And i can get the parts near at cost, and luckily I found a mechanic on watch tonight who can do it for free in exchange for time on lifts and such. So, I'm rebuilding the 700. I'm looking to build it up pretty well. I'm looking for better low end, and the rest is basically managable, where should I start, what do i need, etc? I need a new valve body (thats the name right..) new 'mini clutch' things, and new gears, among other parts, but thats the basics. What sort of parts am i lookin for? e.g. what material disks, what sort of body thing... sorry i sound like an idiot, its probably cause I am. But i'm good with a wrench and a bullet, thus im in the military... thanks for the help though.

Start with a late 87/88 trans case from a TPI car to begin with.

These have all pertinent factory updates and are the strongest to begin with and will have the proper shift points etc.

Use the Trans GO reprogramming kit on the rebuild.

Do a search here for ProBuilt and take a look around his site, lots of pictures and text to help you out.

Also a factory manual and the latest 700r4 ATSG book will be your friend.

Most areas of the country have a large transmission shop supplier near it where u can buy hard parts for decent prices, might take u a little searching, but there out there.

later

If you are starting out with the trans you have (I assume 85 model) , I would use the following parts (if it were mine). This list is designed to keep the budget under control and still give a decent trans.
Deluxe rebuild kit. This will usually include the bushings needed, teflons, clutches, steels, band, filter etc. Approx $125
vette servo
470 or 500 boost valve
87 and later 28 element sprag assembly
.283 boost valve
10 vane pump guts and new vanes
updated accumulator pistons
new lo-roller clutch
beast reaction shell
The sprag and pump guts can be bought used from a trans shop close to you.
If the budget will allow, a transgo shift kit would be nice. B&M is cheaper, but transgo is a better kit.
Wholesale prices on these parts are about $400 total.

could i just pick up a whole kit from Pro-built? or is this not as cost effective, as in, can i get the same parts cheaper somewhere else? They have the 700R4 Rebuild Kit-Street/Strip #41 listed at about $450, which i could manage if the quality is up there. But then there is the shift kit / reprogramming kit on top of that.. And btw, which of those two do I need? I think I may go with the afore mentioned Idea, and i'll probably start checking around for parts tomo or wed to at least compare the complete prices. thanks for the help so far.

And in my infinite wisdom I assumed it was a 700r4, however, upon further inspection and code checking, It turns out its a Turbo 350 transmission. Woo. So besides needing the Deluxe rebuild kit basically, what other parts will i need? I assume corvettes didn't have these, so no vette servo.. everything else basically the same? thanks for bearing with me and all the help guys. I'll keep you all posted.
