4WD Problem (no, Not camaro of course)

Hey guys, my mom's Jimmy has a loud pop in 4WD... i was driving it today (she is in Germany). It kind of just POP's! and then waits for another 20-30? feet or so, maybe less... and pops again, but when i toss it back in 2WD it's fine. Anyone know what's wrong? or think of something? It does it in 4wd reverse and in drive... automatic

Thanks, ScottieB

Oh yeah... it's a 1998 GMC Jimmy, v6 4.3L 2wd/4wd hi/low. I don't know much more than that. 4-door, hatch is 2 door (tailgate and glass). It's right outside, so i can go look at it if need be.

Taking the ole Jimmy out for some joy riding eh? What kind of stuff were you doing before it started making the poping noise?

The Jimmy doesn't get driven much, so about once every other week I drive it about 2 miles, but this is the first week I put it in 4wd in.... forever. I had to go gas it up (was on empty) and I was like "what the hell, i'll toss it in 4wd" so... I did, it didn't like that too much for some reason. But, it's been sitting since October, driven every other week... with the exception of when Amadea (my 89' RS Camaro) had the transmission rebuilt... I drove the Jimmy a few hundred miles. Again, none of those miles in 4wd.

thanks for the help guys

Shagwell, I don't understand the lingo "cv" ... cv joint? or what? any and all info is appreciated

I will leave this here for a day or so. Not third gen related, but I will wait before I lock it.

sounds like the transfer case as well, should be cheap if you can pull it out and take it somewhere to be fixed then install it again. a good site for you would be:

dose it sound like it's comming from the front of the car or around the trans area, if its from the front it's most likly a CV joint, my '89 blazer has the same prob....you put in 4WD and it goes click, click, click, it has been varified as being a CV joint....the boot got caught on road debris and was torn off...I'm just too busy working on the camaro to change it out, it dosen't look very hard though

It sounds like the front, like a pop, i'd assume it had to do something with the front... and not the trans.

so far it is either the joint, or something to do with the transfer case. it's not too big of a deal though imo, since it doesn't get driven in 4wd much.

being as though those are a chain-type t-case, I doubt it's the case. - turn the front wheels to one side, look, then turn to the other and look. Probabl has a boot gone off one of the cv's = dirt grime = worn out joint.
If it is, you really need to change it as they turn all the time, whether in 4wd or not, and can damage alot of things if they come apart.
