Let me guess, its a standard...

If so somone probably goofed and put in gear oil instead of the (i think) reccomended ATF.

If its in an auto tranny, you have some serious issues!

If you have a T-5, it's supposed to have gear oil.

Common misconception. The T5 actually takes ATF, and was designed to be that way. Before I bought my 84' , the trans was rebuilt and someone put gear oil in it. The seals deteriorated prematurely. Upon it's second rebuild, the T5 is holding up as it should with ATF, as per the service manual (dexron II).

When it did have gear oil in it, it was actually noisier, and was a PITA to shift when it was cold. The four speed takes GL-5, SAE80, or 80W-90 gear oil.

The W/C T-5 takes ATF. The T-5 takes gear oil, or did originally at least when it left the factory.

Well, the blocker rings in my non-w/c T5 didn't like the 80W-90 at all. Maybe I have a hybrid, lol.

Well, the repair manual says ATF for the T-5 too, but the only two non-W/C T-5 cars I've seen both had gear oil as their factory fill.

most aluminum case trannies and transfer cases used ATF
