Rear end from 2000 Camaro to a '86?
Hey guys, I got a good deal on a rear end from a 2000 Camaro.
It is disc brakes, 3.23 [ew] ratio, non-posi and no ABS..
Now my question is, can I swap this with the rear end in my car now? [86].. for a disc brake rear end..and would the driveshaft work with it?.. I want to end up putting like 3.73 posi in it.. so is it worth just looking for one with it already? Will any 4th gen rear ends work with a 3rd gen without a lot of modifcation? Thanks

the axle with bolt right in w/o any probs. the only diff is that the 4thgen is 2 inches wider than the rear in your car. as for the disc brakes you will need to buy a new proportioning valve for a disc car or you can remove the bolt in the front of yours and place 3 washers inside the whole.(cheap and effective way) which gives more pressure to rear brakes so they will work.

Thanks, I saw there was another topic on this.. my search hasnt been working lately.. so I appologize for the post.. Any clue how much HP/TQ a stock rear end will handle from a 4th gen? Where is the proportioning valve located on the front?.. and how much would a new one cost?

proportional valve is directly below/infront of the master cylinder right under the hood in the top right corner of your motor.

Cool, could having the back wheel's have a different track length [94+ rear end is a few inches wider?] to them hurt the car? I actually think it might help handling a little bit.. any thoughts on this? or is it not even enough to matter?

What wheels
What wheels are you running? I have IROC wheels, and plan on putting in a 4th Gen rear. I have seen others running aftermarket wheels with no problem, but I am not sure about the factory wheels. Not meaning to steal your thread, but which wheels will fit without rubbing?

i have a 2002 ss rear end in mine, im pretty sure all 4thgen rear ends are the same length they wouldn't make one longer and the rest differnet but i'm not sure. it makes your car handle better if anything especially at high speeds, i have c5 zo6 rims on my car and the rears fits perfect, the rear end literaly fits in the springs are in same spot just bolts right in so it doesn't hurt the car, only makes it better.

Im thinking fo doing this sawp, i want to get a 4th gen rear with posi like 3.73s or what ever but i want to rebuild it anyways so its "bullet prof" You can cut the ends off the rear n take 2 icnhes off each side and re weld the ends back on to make it the same as stock right? you just need to have custom inner shafts made?

As for the wheels, I have a 2000 LS1 rear in my 1992 - my 16" wheels fit fine. For the rear disc brakes and posi 3.42 gears that only cost me $225, I can live with the wheels sticking out a tad on each side.
You will have to find a different spare tire probably - my stocker won't clear the disc brakes on the LS1 rear.
As for the axle cutting, you'd have to have it done at a professional shop I'd think. It would be hell I'd think to make a die that the entire rear sits into and keeps the axles perfectly aligned while you welded them in place. I know places do it for you, but not sure how, or how much. On something as important as a rear axle, I'd rather pay someone to do it if I had to have them shortened. But, if you cut them correctly, you could just use the axles from a 3rd gen rear, they'd be the right length.
And, if I were going to go through the trouble (and money) of cutting and welding, then I'd pay to have a Ford 9inch or something stronger than a 10 bolt made to work. A 4th gen rear is no better (stronger) than a 3rd gen rear.

I just bought a rear end out of a 4th gen camaro for $240 with 3.73 and posi. Where exactly do I need to put the washers for the necessary pressure?

dont mean to bring this back from the dead but my question might be better posted here rather than make a new thread. i was searchin but couldnt find the definate answer. i think this is the way to do it but i'm just checking
for adapting the stock 3rd gen disk brakes rubber line to the ls1 rear end, do you just reuse the stock 3rd gen T block from the stock rearend, and screw in the stock LS1 rear hardlines?

It may depend. You may have to get adapters or flare new ends, may not. I put a 2000 rear in my 1992, and everything just hooked up, except for the E-brake cable. A disc rear proportioning valve from the dealer, and I was set. It's one of those have to see what happens things - just put it in and make it work!
