700r4 slow to first engage when cold

We have a 91 RS and when the car has been sitting overnight it will take a long time of letting it idle before it will "catch" and put a load on the drivetrain. More than a minute if I don't rev it a bit. Reverse and positions other than O will engage more quickly.

After the car has warmed up it is fine -- no more problems. It has been this way for probably a year now. Any thoughts on what might be wrong?

Thanks!

tranny slow to engage

Well, a lot of times, slow cold engagement is the 1st sign that the tranny is going downhill. It can also be low/dirty fluid.
