speedometer cable to Electric
speedometer cable to Electric
Some of you may have seen my other threads about converting my 84 dash to a 92.
Well today, I removed the speedometer cable, and was going to put the VSS version in it's place.
When I compared the plastic gear on the cable driven and that on the electric version. The cable had a larger diameter.
How do I get the correct plastic gear for the electric version? Is there a number on the old one, that I can cross reference for the new style?
I can take pics if you dont' know what I'm talking about.
Thanks
Chris.

I did some rear gear changes and found I had to change the speedo gear each time. All the gears look alike. They come in different colors for the different teeth. I think my original was (red) 34 teeth for a 700 tranny and a 2.73 rear gear. When going to a 3.42 gear I had to go to a speedo gear that had more teeth. I then put in a 3.23 gear and had to get a speedo gear that had more teeth than the original but less than the one that was correct for the lower rear gear. Each tooth is about 3 miles per hour on your speedometer. I then went to the autometer dash with the electronic speedometer. Everything worked exactly the same. First, I would use the gear that was in the car and see if the speedometer is correct. If it is slow I would use a gear with more teeth as needed. You should be able to get the gears from chevy. If not there are transmission supply houses around and on the net that you can get them from.
Ya the one that was with the cable was a white color gear, and the one with the electric is red.
But the more I think about it, the car orginally had like 195/75/14 tires, it now has 234/60/16's I believe.
Before I started this project, I want to say the speedometer was off (can't remember if it was fast or slow tho) by a few miles per hour.
I wonder if I should just put the red one in there, and see how it works?

You can still get the gears from the dealer. Go to a Chevy or Pontiac parts department. They will need to know how many teeth you need and if you know the color it would be helpful. The same gears were used in all the 700 transmissions no matter what car it was in. tciauto.com/components/speedometer_gears.htm has a listing of "Driven Gears" to tell you the number of teeth, color, O.E.M. part numbers and everything else about them you do not need to know.
