Tranny issues, please help

I have an 89 RS with a 305 TBI and 700r4. I have had the car for a year and its been 100% reliable till the other day. I fired it up and went to back out of the garage and put it in Reverse and it just sat there till I gave it tons of gas and then it would move but as soon as I let off it would stop on a dime it wouldn't keep rolling. All the forward gears are fine, also if the car is running and its in neutral it won't move but if the car is off and in neutral I can push it with ease. A guy from work claimed if I adjust something called bands on it it will free that up and be fine but I called my local dealer and they said my tranny is going and I need a new one at the cost of 2700 bucks but I can get and LS1 with tranny for that. I just want to know if it is going or if I can adjust it like this dude said from my work. I have never had one problem with the tranny no slipping or anything and yes the fluid is full. Please help can it be fixed or adjusted.

sounds like rebuild time to me. i had one doing almost the same thing then i lost 3-4 shift alltogether. 2700 is insane. around here $700 for rebuild , parts about $200 if you can do it yourself.
