Are ring gear spacers safe?
I have an entire 3.42 open rear out of a mid 80's camaro.
I got a good deal on a low mileage posi(carrier) out of an 87 T/A that I thought was a 3 series. Just found out it is a 2 series that came out of a 2.73 rear.
Are the gear spacers to use 3 series gears on 2 series carrier safe? I found a couple sites that say they are not safe to use and can cause catastrophic failure of the rear end and cause a crash?
opinions?

What do you mean by "safe". When I see someone refer to safe, I start seeing lawyers.
I never heard of one breaking. Its hardened steel ring with holes drilled thru it. If its installed correctly, it should last forever.

well i mean is it an accepted professional practice or a back yard diy band-aid fix
I have heard spacers put way too much stress on the bolts and they are prone to loosening or shearing off
I am an experienced mechanic but have limited hands-on with diffs and no experience with spacers. That is why I am asking for opinions and experiences from the board.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
They are widely used; and were the ONLY method for putting higher numerical ratio gears into many stock rear ends, until farily recently.
I don't see anything in you vehicles that would indicate against using one.
Just as an aside, I found a couple of sites that say the Earth is flat. I haven't been going out of my way to avoid falling off the edge, though.
