Driven Gears and Drive Gear questions..

I have 3.42 rear end. I am trying to make my VSS work with me.
My t-5 is from an 86 t-a. Anyone know what kind of gears would be in the tranny?
How can I check the gear in the transmission? How can I replace it?

Lastly, What is the part numbers for both gears I need for t-5 with 3.42's and 16 tires.
Thanks

Not sure on the part #'s for the gears, but the tooth counts you need for 3.42 is the 7 tooth drive gear and the 19 tooth driven gear. You can remove the driven gear assembly and shine a flashlight into the hole and possibly be able to count how many teeth are on the drive gear. There's only two possibilities, 7 or 9, most got the 7 tooth. To replace the drive gear, you have to drop the trans out of the car and remove the tailshaft housing to gain access to the drive gear.

Lets say I have a 9 tooth drive gear instead of a 7, what driven gear could I use to make it relatively close?

Also, the dealership told me they no longer make the gears... who makes them for VSS applications?

didn't I already link you to my spreadsheet to calculate the driven/drive gears you need?
also, look at the transmission center, if a gear exists, they'll have it.

Yea, that'll work.
I made up this excel file to do it for me, along with a few other nifty features:

Speedometer Gears, Speedometer Gear, Ford, GM, Dodge 700R4
There. That's probably where you got that link from anyway...
I dealt with these guys before, talked to Don. He knows his stuff.

Two questions,
Are T-5 and 700 r4 gears interchangable?
Second, I know cable and vss gears are different, I saw no VSS gears on your chart for part numbers, and no info for T-5's. So what now?

Yea, my spreadsheet is kinda just for my application, the T10, or other easily adjustable applications like a T5 and 700R4.

You can modify parts of it. Put in your rear gears and tire size. Then see what drive gear is in the trans, and the spreadsheet will output the driven gear you want to use. Or you can put in different drive gears, in order to find the closest relationship between drive-driven, to get an accurate reading.
You gotta make some tweaks to it for your usage.

I have no clue about VSS gears, I didn't know they were different. I imagine the difference is that no cable, but electrical pulses instead, the ratio of drive-driven still needs to be right.
Perhaps someone else can chime in with more info.

The vss gears I no shaft, but more or less a "D" shape nubby that it uses to drive the VSS. Perhaps I could modify the cable ones. I need the part numbers that is why I asked.

I'm not sure on the T-5 speedo gears, but I know for a fact that the VSS gears and cable gears for 700r4's will interchange since I did just the opposite of what you need to do. I used a VSS gear on my cable shaft in my 700r4. I would think it'd work the same on the T-5's since the cable style gears for the T-5 also have a steel shaft with a D-shaped end on them. You do need to get the part# for a T-5 gear though, whether it's cable or VSS since they're way smaller than the 700r4 gears.

Absolutely not. T5 gears are smaller than 700R4 gears.

Since no one else has stepped up here with the info, you're going to have to search and find it online and in the aftermarket. I bought my gears 5 years ago when the parts were still around at the dealer.

I haven't seen him on the site for a while, but jmd used to sell these parts (I purchased my T-5 drive and driven gears from him. Try a PM.

If JMD falls through, try 5 speeds.com (Medatronics Corp.). They're usually able to get just about any part for a T-5, so give them a try as well.
