Do Lockers Wear Out?

Been looking up information on beefing up my 10 bolt, and I was eyeing the Powertrax no slip locker.

Was wondering if lockers wear out like posi unit's clutches do? This is my biggest concern, as my stock posi is pretty much dead. I will probably end up going with a locker if they do not need maintenance.

lockers probably wouldn't be a good idea for a stock 10 bolt

For what reason? Remember, I'll be trying to strengthen up other things: Even with stronger axles, aluminum girlde and welded axle tubes?

I can tell you personally that if you do more street driving than actual racing, you'll hate the powertrax unit. I ran one for a while in my 69 camaro with a 12 bolt, and it jerked a lot, clicked really loud, and every once in a while when turning a corner, it'd all of a sudden catch a tooth and bang so loud, you'd swear you just snapped an axle in half, not to mention the whole car would suddenly jerk sideways! They're unbeatable for straight line, full traction to both axles, but totally suck for everyday street driving. I ended up selling mine on ebay and going with an Eaton clutch style posi. End result, much better street manners! If you're totally set on getting a diff unit with no clutches to wear out, I'd recommend going with the zexel-torsen unit from a 98-02 f-body. It requires 28 spline axles, which you should already have if you're still running your stock 1990 ten bolt.

Yeah I read alot about the powertrax locker street manners, but the one I was looking at is the no-slip version (PWT-92-0776-2805). I would have thought this would have been alright for street, no?

on the street you'll break the power-trax unit long before you'd ever wear a posi out. mw66nova broke one with his 305(12sec 305 but still ). I've seen several broke in the mud. If you want posi w/o clutches to wear out, then get the torsional. Either the 4th gen unit or a true-trac. - I love mine.

I ran both the powertrax and the true track in my Dana 44 - road racing app. They both sucked compared to the Detroit locker, that was optimal for that rear end. The optimal traction device for the 10 bolt is the T2R, T2R and the T2R. Almost as good as the Detroit! You can get the T2R at Stranoparts.com Ask any road racer running one what they think about it!

Who exactly makes the T2R? I have heard alot about it, but I cannot find it anywhere. Can I get a link? Same goes for the Zexel Torsen that is mentioned in the tech article "Beefing up the 7.625 10 bolt"...and apparently that is only $99?

Zexel Torsen makes the T2R. I was one of the first people to get a prototype unit some years back. Since then I have bought two more units. It is NOT the $99 deal, which is not available anymore. The T2R is about $500. Sam Strano is the only place I know of that carries them.

the problem with the powertrax for the 7.5" 10bolt is size.

its has to be so small to fit in there, that you WILL break it with regular carguy street driving...

yes, even with all the bracing in the world, you cant change the fact that the case isnt very stiff, the gears are too small, and any diff in there will break... save your money for a future rear end upgrade. a 9" housing, axle and torque arm mount is only $650... get ANY 9" center for a temp, and drive on that.

thats just my advice on the subject.

The $99 deal was through SLP on brand new take out units from the 4th gen f-bodies. When the SS package was ordered, SLP replaced the factory Zexel-Torsen unit with an Auburn Pro Series unit. The 4th gen units work pretty good and cost a lot less than the T2R. If you check ebay regularly, you can score one on there fairly easy. That's where I got mine. I paid about $135 and it even included a 3.42 ring and pinion. SLP sold the last one they had probably about 2-3 years ago. Just remember that it has to be from a 98 or newer f-body. 97 and older came with the standard Auburn posi. If you're decided on the T2R and can afford $500, just go with Julie's suggestion.

i picked up a used powertrax a little while back and have since installed it. i like it. its quiet most of the time, when taking sharp turns at slow speed the car jerks a little but its not terrible. i fortunatly do not use the car as a daily driver because if i did i might have a problem with it. i think it works well and its a cheaper way to get traction in an open rear car.

Thanks for your replies guys, but I think I am going to opt for the Eaton Truetrac, since I wanna do gears anyhow.
