t-56 console question

Hey everyone here is another t-56 tranny installation question. I'm usually pretty good with figuring out problems but this one has me a little puzzled. I cut the hole, (88 iroc used to be an automatic), in the tranny tunnel for the shifter to enter the passenger compartment. I placed it in the spot that I read on the tech boards and thought i copied down correct info. Question is the shifter hits the plastic upper console when I place the shifter in either 1st 3rd 5th or Rev. So a lot of the time the shifter doesnt actually place the tranny in gear and it pops out of the synchros and into neutral. I took off the console cover and went for a spin and it worked fine. Any suggestions on how I should remedy this? I thought about taking a dremel tool and just taking a little of the plastic off of the upper console cover.......Thanks in advance!

The easiest way to fix it would be buy a performance shifter. Hurst, Pro 5.0, B&M, any of those should have a tighter pattern and solve your problems. Plus, the action is a LOT better on any aftermarket shifter than a stock one and you'll be glad you spent the money.

I have a T56, with a relatively junky Hurst shifter, and I only have a little contact with the console in reverse, but not enough to really matter.
