Hey guy's this is what im looking for, I need a trans that I can still race BUT can drive city and highway. I have a turbo350 but it sucks large ***** driving highway. I was thinking about 700r4 but I don’t know how good they are for racing. Is there an auto trans that has 5 gears

If you want 5 gears might as well get a manual. Good for racing and putting around town.

There are plenty of guys running 700r4's in race applications, many running well into the 10's. - If you do a little searching you'll find what you need for how much power. - PATC has a very good "tip sheet" with the ins and outs of the 700r4. - It is a great street/strip trans.

The 200r is another option, but will usually cost a bit more overall. NOT the 200c, the 200r4(how many 9 sec GN's have you seen? Most are still running their 200r.)

The Gear Vendors type OD add-on units would require A LOT of work to fit under our cars. The torque arm would have to be custom, custom short drive shaft, cutting and widening of the trans tunnel to fit it under the car....etc. All at the cost(probably more than) a decent 700r4, which will bolt in.
Plus, you still wouldn't have that 3.06 low gear of the 700....

I have built a number of 700's that went in 500hp plus cars that weighed less than 3000lbs. They do Ok, the sun gear shell is usually the weak link. There are kits and complete valve bodys available with a manual, forward shift pattern. If you are making ALOt of hp, the 3-4 clutch pack(atleast) will need freshened over the winter. You will need to start with an '87 or newer 700(not a 4L60E) to get the good 10 vane pump, good sprag and good low gear planetaries. If you have someone build it, use the vette second gear servo assy, Kevlar band and Raybestos 3-4 clutches. I will run a 700 behind my 383 as a daily driver. Hope this helps.....

The transgo 700 2&3 kit has a full manual shift option.

I don't know. I build my own transmissions. Run a search for opinions on Bow Tie Overdrives. They have been around a long time and they also have a nice website.

yes, you can get a full-manual valvebody for a 700r, you can now even get a manual vb with a trans brake. - I agree, you'll want a later(87 or newer) unit. Depending on the dollars you're looking to spend and either you abilities to either biuld one yourself or having one built locally, ordering one built for performance applications can be the best way to go. Many joe-schmo trans shops don't have the knowledge to build a good hipo 700r4. The old T350/T400 tricks don't work with a 700. - Personally I reccomend PATC(raptor), but Dana at Pro Built is also highly reccomended on this board, and from what I've seen/heard, he builds a good trans and runs a good company.

also, there are several people putting more than 500hp at them and in cars heavier than 3000lbs that are running 700r's with no issues. - I've got one in a big block powered truck caring the front end through low gear that gets driven to and from the track, and back and forth to work(over 30 miles oneway) 2-3 times a week.
