Ok, so I am a student so money is tight. I just bought an 87 camaro 2.8L a few months ago. The "check engine" light is on so i need to get that checked out. I changed the tranny oil about a month ago and it was pretty obvious that the previous owner hadnt changed it in a LONG time. it was almost pitch black with metallic/reflective tint to it.

Anyways, my transmission sounds like its grinding a little bit (automatic by the way). I figure, if there is something wrong with the gears, or ultimately with the tranny itself, why not just replace the entire thing. I want to do a swap for a manual, but I don't really know what to swap it to. My friend recommended a T5, but I've seen elsewhere that the T56 is also pretty great. I'm not looking for this amazing street car, but I want to have fun driving it. Any recommendations between the two, or even another?

 

pretty sure a t-56 won't bolt up to a 2.8. the t-56 is a v-8 tranny.

yeah, t-5 came behind 2.8s from the factory. just had a different bell housing and spline count than the v-8s did.
