dilema

ok heres the deal im new here but ive had my 84 camaro for a little over a year. when i got it (for $400) it had crappy paint and rust stripes,a wrecked interior, and a very slow and worn out v6 with a dying tranny.I redid the interior and am working on the body, now to the engine. i bought a carbeurated 350 out of a 81 truck (the motor only had 1000 miles on it) and swapped engines and various other parts to work with the v8. as i ran out of money i came to the tranny.now heres the question what tranny to use. i have 350 turbo from a 77 monte carlo and a burnt up 700r out of an 84 van (i eventually want to convert it to stick shift) but until then i need an automatic to get to work in. i could get a shitty patch job done on the 700 but it wont last very long or i could try to use the t350 but i dont know if the t350 would be hard to put in right with everthing hooked up. what would be the easiest and cheapest temporary fix could some please help.

maybe a 700R4 from a pick and pull ($130). That's probably cheaper than fixing the one from the van.

What trans was in the car stock?
You should be able to steal the tailshaft (with torque arm mount) from your old trans, and use the torque arm and driveshaft.

I'm assuming this camaro had a V6 700R4 before. So I think that means if you use another 700R4, you're ok to reuse the driveshaft and crossmember and tailshaft with torque arm.
If you go to a TH350 - I think you'll need a longer drive shaft, not sure if you need a different tailshaft (?), and you will need a different (custom?) cross member.
Those are the issues that come to mind, not sure if they are all indeed issues though.
I'd use another 700R4 from the wreckers - then start stockpiling parts for your stickshift conversion.

i think the original tranny was a 200 something thats what i was told.anyway i already have a tailpiece from a wrecked camaro so i guess ill just get another 700R4 like you said and put my tailpiece on it until i get the manual stuff together. hopefully the junkyard tranny will hold up for a while. also when i was looking at manual options i noticed that the 6 speed (t56) if im correct is way more expensive than the t5. and was wondering if the extra gear is worth the extra price. im still in school and have very low amounts of money$$ which sucks

200? oh, yea, 200c, that's the baby TH350. It's a 3 speed right?
Do a search on this forum, to see what tranny drops right in, the 700R4 is longer I think, so you'd need a different crossmember, driveshaft, etc.
I think it's longer, since it has the extra gear, that's how I remember. Anyway, that's the key thing to find out. It might be that the TH350 is the easiest swap for you, with you only needing a torque arm bracket style tailshaft for the TH350.

Yea, for standard trannys, you have your choice of 4-5-6 speeds.
4 - T10 is the easy swap, rather than M21, etc.
5 - T5, non world class, or world class, or aftermarket of any variety.
6 - The T56, either stock from a 4th gen, or aftermarket.

Depending on the HP application, strength is usually:
T5 non-wc-> T5-wc-> T10-> T56, then the aftermarket variations.

You can get the stock setups, probably under a grand for the entire conversion. I mean "entire". More if it's the T56, harder to find if you want the T10. T5's are common to find.
Aftermarket is where it hits the wallet hard.

T56 is absolutely worth it. Dual overdrives mean you can go CRAZY on rear gear ratio, like 4.11, and still be able to drive it on the highway without maxing out at 80mph. That's part of the beauty of it.

yea the 200c had 3 gears plus overdrive it was smaller than the 700r4 and it had a different bolt pattern where it hooked up to the motor.also i already have a 700R4 from a camaro that i took to a transmission shop and the guy said said the pump was wrecked. but it fit in my car just fine with the original drive shaft and crossmember.anyway in a couple days im going to get another 700R4 a later model one i think because i heard gm fixed most of the problems they had with the earlier ones.hopefully this one works good for i while before i collect the stuff for the stick swap.one more question does the 350 turbo shift faster, if true what needs to be done to a 700R if any thing to bring about faster acceleration

I thought the 200c was a 3 speed? 200R4 is the 4 speed one isn't it?

the 350 won't shift any faster, unless you put in a shift kit, or a different boost servo or whatever. Definately not my area of expertise, but search on "corvette servo", or "shift kit" and you'll get a schwack of info.
I wouldn't bother if it's a temporary tranny though, it's just money in the trash...
