i was just wondering if anyone knew for sure what my rear end gears are? its an 83 trans am....

its a 305 with an auto trans, 3 spd overdrive, not sure if its a 700r4 or th350???? but its a posi, i think they all are???

how would anyone else know what you have if you don't. the best anyone could do is take a guess at what it left the line with 20+ years ago. if you want to know get under the car pull the cover and do the math.

 

hey..or howabout you just leave it at the last post before yours... i didnt want to climb under the car and take off the diff cover.. if someone knew what it already had, i didnt know they came with 15 million different rear ends.., i dont know much about this car cuz i just got it, so i came here to ask, maybe put in some info, instead of put down. i know my car has a 305 and i know it has a 3 spd overdrive i donbt know what tranny it is, cuz i dont know what they come with...

 

Just count the bolts on the rear end, don't need to remove the cover. I would expect you to have the 10 bolt with 3.23 posi. Your transmission is called a 700R4. 3 forward gears with another gear called an Overdrive.

 

83 Trans Am with a 305 and automatic transmission depends if the engine is a LG4 (4BBL) or a LU5 (CFI).

The LG4 cars came with 3.23 gears
The LU5 cars came with 2.93 gears and got 3.23 gears with the G92 option.

The 1983 L69 Trans Am only came with a manual tranny and got 3.73 gears.

Look at your RPO list.

That's all assuming your diff or what's in your diff is still original. In the last 24 years, anything could have been changed.
