Where is the best place to locate and buy a posi for my 82 z28, The Junkyard? Besides on here shipping charges are kind of high. Should I locate one in town and replace the gears and such? Any suggestions.....

A junkyard posi may well require some work, though the expense might be cost effective if you can find a complete rear end with the gear ratio you'd like. Of course, Summit, Jeg's or other on-line companies are an option for the posi itself.

So buying a posi unit from jegs or summit and then could I use my same axle or would I have to find a different one?

Purchase the appropriate posi unit and you can install it in the rear end you currently have in the car.

Check Jeg's. Auburn Gear. GM 7-1/2 and 7-5/8, 10-bolt, 26 spline. Part #'s 109-542057 (3.23 up) or 109-542058 (3.08 down), depending on gear ratio.

Here's how to determinne what ratio the rear is (jerk the diff cover and look): numbers are stamped on the ring and pinion:

41 : 15 = 2.73
40 : 13 = 3.08
42 : 13 = 3.23
41 : 12 = 3.42
41 : 11 = 3.73

What about the gears do they have to be 26 spline also, cause I looked and I didn't find any that are 26 spline only 27....

The axels themselves are 26 spline.

The guy's at Randy's Ring and Pinion can also give you some good tips or advice. If you call them, ask about useing a solid pinion spacer instead of a crush sleeve. Works great.
