t56 yes or no?

hey guys i am rebuilding a 350 got the cam and intake waiting on the heads any way i am thinking about getting a t56 to marry it to or just getting a built turbo 350 ... i have the turbo 350 under my car now but it s used and out of the junkyard ..put it in myself when i blew the 700r4... now ive always wished my car was a stick and i am putting 373 gears in the rear .. i really like the idea of the 5th and 6th gear overdrive

Any thoughts and info greatly appreciated

I've been running a 6-speed for close to 6 years now and I absolutely love it. I would say it's probably the best single upgrade I've done to the car. I highly recommend it for anyone who doesn't mind working a clutch.

Also, your highway mileage with 3.73's behind a TH350 is gonna suck bigtime. The engine is gonna be turning a lot of RPM at interstate speeds. I run 3.70's in a 9-bolt behind my 6-speed and have gotten as good as 23mpg highway, and I turn about 1700 at 80mph. Gotta love double-overdrive.

6-spd is the way to go. Not too hard of a swap into a 3rd gen. Be careful, though, there are 2 different versions of the T56 - the OE version that came in Camaros and Vettes and an aftermarket version. The aftermarket version was built to allow use with older push-style clutch systems. The F-body and vettes came OE with a pull-style clutch that requires a different flywheel, and a different hydraulic setup (at least a new slave - the older masters may still work). Oh yeah, you'll need to go get pedals, and cut holes in the floor for the clutch pedal since this car originally had an automatic.

If you have a 1 peice rear seal it is very straight forward. If you have a 2 peice rear seal you have to use a special flywheel. I love my T56. It ties for first place with the LT1 with upgrades I have done.

I love my T56 also other then my reverse problems. The car just needed a 6 speed...so much more fun in turns i love holding the gear out, just like a complete different feeling almost like a different car.

I have 3.23s still in my car so i dont get really to take advantage of 6th gear on the highways unless going 75 flat or slight down hill. 3.42s would hit the spot but ill most likely go 3.73s for more performance. I actually have not got the chance to calculate gas mileage since i put the T56 back in august.

Another vote for the T-56 here! I love my 6 speed! Im running 4.10 gears and run about 2400 rpm @ 80 mph. Oh yea, 6th gear is now useable on the freeway now! LOL.

Re: t56 yes or no?

YES. The hardest choice for me is whether to get 3.73s 3.90s or 4.10s

Re: t56 yes or no?

the T56 is the BEST mod Ihave done to my car. its so much better the T5. ya theres a couple small hurdles to get over during the swap but the rewards will outway them. As for a good rear gear for it, I would say 3.73. Thats just my opinion though. I had 4.10s in my car for a while and it was nice at first but after a while it was just aggervating have to shift constantly. The engine revs up so fast in 1st that its almost usless to use 1st gear.

Re: t56 yes or no?

Same here. I love my T-56.

I just have the lame stock gas-mileage highway cruising gear in my car (3.73); if I ever trash it, I'll probably put in something more nearly appropriate to this trans, like 4.10. The T-56 can REALLY use a nice rear gear to good advantage.
